Dr. Charles Robert Beyrer

Beyrer - Dr. Charles Robert, on May 15, 2025, a recently retired Long Island Ophthmologist, has died at the age of 91 after a brief illness at his home in Oakdale, NY. Dr. Beyrer, born in Brooklyn, NY, on February 12, 1934, he was the only child of the late Kathleen Carroll

Beyrer and Charles Augustus Beyrer, also of Brooklyn. He was a graduate of the Adelphi Academy, Hobart College in Geneva, NY, and the Faculty of Medicine, University of Bern, in Switzerland. He trained in retinal surgery at Manhattan Eye and Ear hospital, and then was a longtime member of Suffolk Ophthalmology associates, a private group specialty eye care practice in Bay Shore, NY. During his long career, he served as Chief of Ophthalmology at both Southside Hospital, in Bay Shore, and Good Samaritan Hospital, in West Islip, NY. An Air force reservist, he was called into service during the Vietnam war to provide eye surgery for returning U.S. troops. Dr. Beyrer was an active physician until his retirement in 2023, aged 89. Nationally recognized for his expertise in retinal conditions, he was a pioneer of the use of laser surgery in private practice. He was preceded in death by his late wife, Patricia; and two daughters, Jacqueline and Judith Beyrer. He is survived by his first wife, Nancy Beyrer; daughters, Anne Beyrer, Dr. Kathyrn Beyrer (O'Brien), and Robin Hills-Fredericks; and by his son, Dr. Chris Beyrer, a professor of medicine at Duke University; and five grandchildren including Lillianne Atlihan,

William O'Brien, Harrison Fredericks, Luke O'Brien, and Wyatt Fredericks. Visitation Sunday, May 18, 2025, 11-3pm, Overton Funeral Home, 172 Main Street, Islip, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his honor to The Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York.
