Eileen Martin Obituary

Martin - Sister Eileen, 91, died peacefully on February 22, 2025, in Dobbs Ferry, NY. Sister Eileen was born to Irish immigrants and grew up in Manhattan. She graduated from Blessed Sacrament High School and the College of Mount Saint Vincent before joining the Sisters of Charity. She held graduate degrees from Seton Hall and Saint Michael's College. Sister

Eileen dedicated most of her professional life to education. She taught in Staten Island, Yonkers, and Shrub Oak, and she eventually moved to her beloved Long Island, where she served as the principal of Our Lady Queen of Apostles in Center Moriches. At OLQA, she impacted the lives of thousands of students over the course of her 30 years there. After retiring, she found new vocations in prison ministry, youth ministry, and pastoral care. She loved her community and her family. She cherished her visits to relatives in Ireland, and almost every year, she would stand on the steps of Saint Patrick's Cathedral to watch and cheer on the Saint Patrick's Day Parade. With her infectious smile and big personality, Sister Eileen brightened the lives of everyone who was lucky enough to know her. She will be so dearly missed, especially by her nieces and their families, Barbara Pescuma of West Islip, Coleen Antico of South Glastonbury, and Deirdre Moore of Glen Rock. Sister Eileen was predeceased by her parents; and by her sister and best friend, Ann McGovern. Services honoring Sister Eileen's life will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at the Sisters of Charity Convent at the University of Mount St. Vincent. Visitation will be at 9AM followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30AM.

Sister Eileen became very good friends with my sister Susan, through CYO in the 70's and 80's. In 1990, she supported our family during our mother's abrupt passing in 1990. She even helped us choose meaningful scriptures for our mother's funeral service. Considering I was quite a handful as one of her students, it gave me great joy to get to know her as a person after I grew up a bit.
Without question, Sister Eileen taught me to become an effective writer. She was a great teacher and good friend. God speed to you Sister Eileen. You've earned your wings !!
