Francis Gencorelli Obituary

Gencorelli - Francis W., 86, architect and longtime resident of Merrick, NY, passed away on June 27, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife Josephine of 59 years; his adoring daughters, Caterina and Margherita; son-in-law

Peter Yoder; and cherished grandson, Joshua Yoder. Francis, the ninth of twelve siblings, was predeceased by his loving brothers and sisters: Gladys, Rosemary (Angelo), June (Herman), Genaro (Lorraine), Henry, Bennet, Bernice (Albert), and Theresa. He is survived by his loving sisters Alyce, Helen (William), and Doreen (Edward); sister-in-law Josephine (Bennet); and many nephews, nieces, and godchildren. Francis was born and raised in Rosedale, NY by Jerry and Theresa Gencorelli. After attending Brooklyn Technical High School, he went on to Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI), where he received a Bachelor of Architecture. While at VPI, he received the Paris Prize in Architecture which allowed him to further his studies at Yale University, where he earned a Master in Architecture. After completing his advanced degree, he went to work for LaPierre, Litchfield and Partners in NYC, and then worked with prominent architect Edward W. Slater. Always the entrepreneur, Francis opened his own practice, Gencorelli & Salo, Architects, P.C. and was in business for over 50 years. The firm specialized in the design and construction of banks, schools, manufacturing and research facilities, offices, condominiums, and hotels. Francis was a firm believer in keeping a building's aesthetics consistent with its surrounding areas, such as in his design in the 1970's of the then Long Island Savings Bank in the Merrick Gables community. Among other notable works are the Guerlain, Inc. offices and distribution center in Somers, NY and the Long Island Marriott Hotel in Uniondale, NY. Francis was a proud member and past president of Kiwanis, the Mental Health Association, the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the National Institute for Architectural Education (NIAE). Francis often worked six days a week during his career, but he always made time for family on Sundays by preparing an incredible meal that included fresh vegetables from his garden. For many summers he would rent a Winnebago and take the family camping throughout the east coast. Later in life, the family enjoyed trips to his favorite Caribbean island, Bermuda, as well as a trip back to his ancestral home of Acri, Italy. An avid gardener, chef, nature lover, Mets fan, and cigar aficionado, Francis will be remembered for his wisdom, great sense of humor, and devotion to his family. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate that those who wish to express sympathy consider making a donation in Francis's name to one of the following scholarship programs: Brooklyn Technical High School - Centennial Fund, Virginia Polytechnic Institute - Beyond Boundaries Scholarship, or Yale University - School of Architecture: Dean's Endowment Scholarship Fund. Burial will be private and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date for those who would like to come together and remember Francis. Funeral arrangements entrusted to N.F. Walker Funeral Home in Merrick.

Frank was my landlord for many years back in the 1970s. Dealing with Frank regarding our often different opinions about what quiet enjoyment meant Frank was always affable, and although I was often rebuffed, it was always with a bit of a taste of dry humor. He was truly unforgettable character.

Brian, the girls and I have such wonderful memories of Uncle Frank over the years. What instantly comes to mind are the traditional sing-alongs with our families gathered around Aunt Jo at the piano, joyfully belting out Christmas carols. He with his cigar in hand standing alongside my dad as together they would take on the lower notes in Good King Wenceslas and The Twelve Days of Christmas. I can close my eyes and hear their chorus of "five golden rings" clearly in my mind. Uncle Frank was also there for us when Brian and I were planning to build our home. Between his architectural expertise and my dad´s talented carpentry skills, we were able to make our dream become a reality. It was truly a family affair. I was recently reminded of his hearty laughter as he, Aunt Jo, and Meg played bocce ball with my mom and dad in our front yard when we came across Allie´s 1st birthday video. Reliving these moments, among dozens more, will forever remain close in our hearts. We feel blessed to have shared them with him. May you rest in peace, Uncle Frank, my dear godfather. We take solace in knowing you are home once again with your loved ones for eternity.

I have known Frank and his wife, my cherished friend, for over 35 years.
Frank always held a strong presence but beyond that presence was a kind and very caring person.
He was a true admirer of nature, especially birds. He was very respectful and protective of the natural world.
Frank held a determination to do his best throughout his days, as I observed less than a year ago.
Frank was a person who inspired others in his own unique ways, he has been admired by myself and my children.
I am grateful for Frank allowing us in his life. Please know that my prayers and love are sent to Jo, Meg, Katie, Peter, Joshua and all your family impacted by this great loss.
With Love,

Every Christmas I would be greeted by Uncle Frank's wide smiling face as I delivered baked goods from my Grandma, his sister, Theresa. Uncle Frank's demeanor was always warm and inviting. He always had a joke to tell me and he genuinely cared when asking how my family and I were. He would joke that Theresa was his favorite sister because she was such a good baker. Now, they're together with their many other siblings, basking in eternal light and love. Uncle Frank will always be here, for he was loved far more than one hundred lifetimes could hold. His memory is filled with the love of so many. My heart is with you Aunt Jo, and all those grieving. God Bless you Uncle Frank, you were a beautiful man.

What can I say about my Uncle Frank? Growing up he was a huge presence in our household. Ma (his sister Theresa) loved him dearly and held him in such high regard. And he was ALWAYS there for her; supporting her through some very difficult times. I know that observing their relationship heavily influenced me and how tightly I bonded with my own (5) brothers.
He was kind, caring, impressive, inspiring and brilliant. But what I treasure most was his larger than life personality and sense of humor!
All of my memories of Uncle Frank are fond ones. And they make me smile. I know the same holds true for my brothers.
Thank you Uncle Frank for everything you did for Ma & being an enormous positive influence in our lives.

I hope this message finds you and your family surrounded by love and support during this difficult time. It is with deep sadness that I extend my heartfelt condolences to you and your family on the passing of your beloved husband and father.

Chanie, Latifa, and I were truly devastated when we heard the news. Frank was a remarkable person who meant so much to all of us. Our interactions with him extended beyond mere business dealings; he became a close friend, a mentor, and an inspiration to us.
We were fortunate to have had the opportunity to know him and engage in meaningful conversations with him. He possessed an unwavering integrity, conducting himself with the utmost respect and holding true to his values. When we purchased the building from him, we not only gained a property but also valuable lessons and guidance. His straightforward approach and honesty left an indelible mark on us.

Frank's dedication to transparency was admirable. He never concealed any information about the building or its tenants from us during the purchase process. We were always fully informed and aware of what we were getting into. Moreover, even after the transaction, he continued to support us immensely. He generously shared his knowledge and expertise, training us on how to effectively manage the tenants and navigate the intricate mechanics of the building.

Whenever he entered a room, he commanded complete attention. His commitment to being fully present was evident, and his extensive knowledge on a wide range of subjects, including global affairs and religion, made our conversations truly enlightening. Even when he had to give us constructive criticism, he did it with love and we knew it was coming from someone who truly cared. We cherish those moments and the wisdom he imparted to us.

Please know that his absence has created an immense void. We will forever remember him fondly and treasure the memories we shared. It is impossible to fully express the impact he made on us personally, as well as the broader community. His belief in our capabilities was evident when he recognized the need for a preschool and community center in Merrick. Despite our small beginnings, he had faith in our potential and made a significant contribution towards establishing an educational facility within his own building.

As you navigate through this time of grief, please remember that you are not alone. We are here for you, ready to provide any support or assistance you may need. Frank's legacy will live on through the lives he touched and through all the lives impacted at our center.
May the love and memories you shared bring you comfort and solace during this challenging period. You and your family remain in our thoughts and prayers.

I have fond memories of Uncle Frank since my first visit to the USA aged 6, and more recently when I stayed with Frank and Jo jo for Christmas a few years ago. He had such a great sense of humour and was incredibly generous and kind. A lot of my memories revolve around food, he was such a fantastic cook. I remember the famous meatloaf, Italian recipes and more recently an incredible seafood pasta. He made me laugh and his love and dedication for Aunty Jo Jo was very inspiring. I feel very grateful that I was able to visit him last June at Roslyn Harbour.

My relationship with Frank Gencorelli started shortly after college. In High School and into College I performed for the Polonaise Folk Dance Group in Maspeth Queens. My dance partner's husband who worked for HUD and had a business relationship with Frank Gencorelli arranged for an interview. After being hired, my work relationship developed with Frank, Joe Matthews Tony Dezego, Gerry Meyer, Sharon Gregor, Maurice Salo, and later with Henny Torkan, John Mombach and Michael Bonacasa. Frank's portfolio of work projects provided a diverse job experience.

A man of character and good morals.
On a partnership project in Brooklyn that stopped due to the general contractor/partner that stoled sub contractor money's, Frank promised that all of the contractors would be paid for their work. Frank kept his word and arranged to have all of the outstanding vendors for the project paid. A major task but a commitment that was made and kept.

Over the years I developed a most valued friendship with Frank his wife Jo and daughter's Meg and Kate.
Frank Gencorelli, a man of integrity honesty and commitment.
I will miss him, but not his cigars.

I knew Frank for more than 50 years. In addition to admiring his wonderful architectural achievements around Merrick, I always enjoyed having discussions with him. We sometimes disagreed on current issues but I always wanted to hear Frank's analysis. I admired his intellect which he so skillfully enhanced with his wonderful humor. He certainly will be remembered and missed. Condolences from me and my family to Jo, Catie, Meg and the rest of their family. With love...........Harriet Pollack

I will always remember Mr. Gencorelli's warm smile and the aroma of his cigar. I have spent countless moments at the Gencorelli house over the 50 years of my friendship with Meg. As a timid little girl, Mr. Gencorelli's easy laugh and welcoming nature would always make me feel at ease and comfortable in their home.
One memory I have is going out to dinner with the Gencorelli family to a seafood restaurant as a child. I had never had lobster before and I remember thinking that it was too expensive to order. Yet, Mr. Gencorelli's generosity prevailed and he encouraged me to order it. To this day, I enjoy lobster and remember the first time I tried it!
Another memory I have is Meg telling me that her father said to only feed birds in the winter and to not feed birds in the warmer months so that they continue to forage for their food. I have to admit that I feel a little guilty because I fill the bird feeder year round since I love seeing the birds outside my kitchen window. Being a nature lover himself, I know Mr. Gencorelli would be understanding! As I write this memory, a beautiful red cardinal landed and sat on the fence outside my window.
Mr. Gencorelli will be remembered for his kindness and generosity...always with a big smile, infectious laugh, and a cigar.

It´s a pleasure and an honor to know the Gencorelli´s.
"Frank" in particular has always made me laugh maybe because we shared the same sense of humor.
We talked about family, business, travels and we definitely had our food critique moments after every meal..lol
He was also very supportive towards Jo-Jo during our scrabble games..lol
But he always happy to see me..
The last time we spoke he told me that I should never let anyone make me feel less than I am.. that I´m kind and good hearted and that I should always remember that..
thank you Frank for being that light for me when I needed it.
Your with the Angels now.. please don´t criticize the food.. lol
God bless you Mr. Gencorelli.

Dwan.
