Joseph Caliolo Obituary

CALIOLO - Joseph E., of Sea Cliff on August 2, four days shy of his 90th birthday. Joe was well known and active in the Sea Cliff community. The 55 year resident served as a member and Chairman of the Village Planning Board for over 40 years. In recognition, he received the village's White Cap Award and honors from the NY State Conference of Mayors and Public Officials. As a testament to his love of children and positive attitude, he coached Sea Cliff Junior Baseball teams for 15 years, and many of them won championships. He was an active member of the Golden Ring seniors group. Joe was a man who dreamed big and knew how to fill a room with good cheer. He was born in Albany NY. During the 1930s, he won several regional and state competitions flying model airplanes handmade by him. His love of aviation then led him to Long Island where he joined the emerging aircraft industry. During WW II, he spent 18 months in Africa working for Douglas Aircraft as a military advisor. Following the war, Joe spent several years working for American Airlines, then started his promotional advertising business for which he continued to work part time. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Helen; his children Alin Wong (Rino), John (Lois) and Robert; his grandchildren Mary Alin Lubold (Chris), William Wong (Julie), Taryna Mitchell (John), Kristin Shannon (Josh), John Caliolo, Robert Caliolo and Laura Caliolo; and great-grandchildren Jason, Nicholas, Ethan and Seth. The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 5 from 2-4 pm and 7-9pm at Whitting Funeral Home, 300 Glen Cove Ave., Glen Head. A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday 9:30am at St. Boniface Martyr R.C. Church in Sea Cliff.

Joe was a great citizen of Sea Cliff! His many years of service on the Planning Board showed him to be fair and helpful to residents. A cheerful man who loved his family and greeted everyone with kindness and respect. My sincere condolences to his family.
