Bob Hoppey, if memory serves me correctly, started teaching in the late 1950's. I got to observe him as a student and BHS and as a colleague working at BHS. Bob was a class act! The consummate gentleman, the dedicated teacher and coach, Bob always greeted a student, colleague or friend with a smile. I was lucky to know him as a teacher, colleague and friend. RIP Bob!

I guess better late than never...coach Hoppey was THE most influential teacher and coach I had at my time at Brentwood HS. Who can forget a man who made sure your hair was cut, face shaven and jersey tucked in! "Look Sharp, feel Sharp, be Sharp!" Words I find myself repeating to my kids. Always called you by your number, and always carried his pencil and pad to make sure you paid for your mistakes. Looking back...he was teaching us way more than Lacrosse. "The bus waits for no man" he used to say...it's waiting for you coach. RIP.

It was fun having you as a Gym teacher and watching your brilliantly coached Lacrosse teams play, back in the early 70's. RIP, coach.

To Mike, Tim and the entire Hoppey family...my deepest condolences. I can still picture Alice and Bob sitting at the bar at Noodles in Port Jeff listening to me play my guitar. Mr. Hop I will never forget our great conversations we had about Cortland, Ward Melville Lax,and music with Alice...your drawings on the napkins were priceless. To know that you are both together in everlasting life should give your family some solace. If a man is marked by the number of friends he has...then yesterday's memorial turnout of 300+ Lax cronies and friends said it all.We should be so lucky. RIP Bob...you have good company up there with Alice and Brendon C.

Co-Coaching Midget Football with Bob; his son's Mike and Timmy, and my brother Bob in the late 60's, was a task of pure pleasure. You were the best Bob! Relax and enjoy Heaven. To the Hoppey Family, I send my heartfelt condolences.

Beyond being compassionate, fair, and supportive of everyone he taught/coached, Coach Hop was a man of honor and integrity. Other than my father and brothers, he had the most influence on what I was to do after leaving Brentwood. His actions instilled that it wasn't as important if you won or lost as much as it was how you presented yourself when you won or lost. That patented stare and simple shaking of ‘no' with his head was enough to let one know that you let Coach Hop down and you needed to do better. His drive to make sure everyone was given the chance to achieve their best impacted so many and for that, the principles he held dear will live on.

Mr. Hoppey was one of the finest most genuine men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I had the honor of playing lacrosse for his 1978 and 1979 Brentwood Sonderling Lacrosse teams. He was an outstanding teacher, coach, leader and role model for many young men and women.

Dear Hoppey Family: I had the absolute pleasure of having Mr. Hoppey as a gym teacher for either 1 or 2 years in high school. I was in adaptive gym due to spinal surgery and during gym we did Richard Simmons exercises and had a great time! Mr. Hoppey called gym, "Physie Eddie" and to this day that's what I call it! Even my son calls gym class, "Physie Eddie". The world will miss Mr. Hoppey. I hope someday all of these stories and tributes warm your spirits!

Coach Hoppey was not only a great coach but a wonderful person. He had a huge role in helping me decide to go on to college and play lacrosse. Over the years when people ask me who my best coach was, without hesitation, I say coach Hoppey, and then I automatically smile.

I will never forget a single conversation with Coach Hoppey that changed the course of my life. It was when he pointed out to me that college lacrosse was a reachable, next step beyond high school lacrosse. Being form a family without a single college graduate at the time, college was not an obvious path. After planting that seed, Coach Hoppy made sure that several colleges took an interest and that I ended up in the right place. I will also never forget his caring and kind manner and the way he could be firm when called for. I can still picture him looking up to and admonishing a much taller player (a crease attackman) who very much needed a bit of motivation. My condolences to the extended Hoppey family.

Hop, Timmy, Ellen & the Hoppey family- Coach Hop was a huge influence on all of the young Three Village lacrosse players, especially me. He was always available for a lax chat or story about some of the great players that he coached throughout the years. He was a first class ambassador of the game and a true gentlemen. My life is much more enriched knowing that I had the priviledge to compete against him & to have both Bob & Alice Hoppey in it. His lacrosse drawings/caricatures still hang in my parents home. I will miss your Dad, but It makes me feel good that he is with your Mom.

With great affection, love, & respect- Bob Betcher

I remember him being the gym coach for the guinea pig year of the 10th grade center. A very good man, with a great sense of humor & respect for female athletes. and ALL that sincerely gave their all during his coaching time with us,

November 15, 2013

My deepest condolences to the Hoppey family. I will never forget the time your dad actually allowed me to drive his sports car...he was in the passenger seat and just a tad bit nervous as I drove around Strongs Neck. He was so relieved when I got out of the driver's seat and the car was still in one piece. He probably put the car back on blocks as soon as he and your mom got home. Remembering lots of laughs and good times with both your dad and mom. Linda Scanlon (nee Haggerty) and the Haggerty family.

I had the pleasure of visiting with Mr. Hop in September 2013 when some of the players from the 1974 Ward Melville LI Lax Champs got together to congratulate Mike Hoppey for winning the NY State Lax Championship this year. It was great to see Mr. Hop and I know that he was very proud of Mike for taking Melville all of the way this year. Mr. Hop has always been a great fan of Melville lacrosse and will always have a special place in my heart.

My deepest condolences to the Hoppey family.

Mr. Hop, we will miss you!!

It is a sad day... I love the photograph you chose, and it just the way I will always remember your Dad. We had such fun growing up together, and your house and yard were the best! Your parents were really great. Such a tribute to your Dad to read all the wonderful things written here. Love to you all.

Saddened to hear of HOP's passing. I was one of the very fortunate ones to have had him as a teacher at Brentwood H.S., to be a fellow faculty member while working at Brentwood H.S. as a teacher and to have shared many precious moments in the locker room/gym before/after practice, and in the school lobby while monitoring the athletes in the lobby before their departure on the late activity buses that would take the athletes home. He was a great teacher of Physical Education and lacrosse. He also helped me and other coaches on how to get the best out of the athletes we coached. My condolences to his wife and family! Rest in peace HOP.

As I reminisce about my time as former student and player of Mr. Hoppey's, it was such a honor to have known him. He helped me get recruited to play lacrosse and taught me about my hard work. It's been over 30 yrs since I graduated Brentwood Sonderling and I saw Mr. Hoppey in 2007 watching a ward Melville lacrosse game. Mr remembered me like I was one of his friends. I know the world was a better place when Mr. Hoppey was there. I know he is in heaven now, looking down at his family, friends and former lacrosse players. I thank God for having Mr. Hoppey come into my life.
He will be truly missed!
