I wasn't coached by Dutch Hess. I was a track man. I remember him fondly and was sorry to hear of his death. He was tough fair and held us all to a high standard when we represented the school. I was an original Gym rat so I spent a lot of time with him, coaches Bob Baratta and Jack McMahon. They had a great impact on my life career and the way I raised my children. I got to know Mrs. Hess when she came to watch basketball games at South. I remember her as a lovely woman. My deepest condolences and respect. Robert "Flea" Hillman class of 1970

I was/am so very sorry to hear of Coach Hess's passing. He never once told me I couldn't do it! Because of that, I spent 3 years as the only female diver on his team from 1973-1975. Thank you for believing in all of us. Yep, he's probably coaching from above now.

Dutch Hess was an opposing coach that earned my complete respect for his masterful manner of coaching at Great Neck South in Nassau County. He was a fierce competitor but was always cordial in relating to other coaches. He personally helped me to improve as a coach. I followed many of Dutch's methods of coaching because he was very successful and generous in sharing with me.
in winning and developing high school players.
Dutch directed GN South High to the Nassau County Basketball Championship in 1967 in a masterful display of coaching.
We became very good friends and I will miss his
him and basketball has lost a vital contributor.

I made the Varsity soccer team at Great Neck South, class of 68 with Dutch as our coach. We had a great team made even greater under his leadership. I remember him fondly and carry 50+ years of respect and admiration for his ability to relate to and respect us as students and athletes.

Coach "Dutch" Hess was a great coach and a fine man. He cared about his students and players. I learned many life lessons while playing for him. My thoughts are with "Mrs. Coach" - Ginny - and his family. I will always remember them.

Coach Hess will long be respected as a coach and mentor to thousands of students and athletes over the decades of his dedicated service to the youth at several schools. I was fortunate enough to know him as my gym teacher in '67/'68 during his first year as the Department Head at Great Neck South Senior High School. "Dutch" was a wonderful man and I was especially thrilled to reunite with him in the last several years and share some great stories of bygone days and reminisce about many former students of his. I will always cherish those times. I'm grateful that he sent me a photo from those old days with a personal note from him about it. You'll long be remembered as a fine teacher and wonderful person who gave so much to his students. My wife, Roberta, and I knew Coach from high school and we send our heartfelt condolences to Ginny and his children and grandchildren. We're so sorry for your loss. RIP Dutch

I am so sorry for the family's loss. Psalms 90:10 says those who live past 80 years are especially strong. May you find comfort through prayer as Milton now rest in God's memory.
