To the family of Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan B. Bruckenthal:
Please know that just as your loved one remains in your hearts and minds; his sacrifice, and that of your family, remains with the people he died defending. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for his bravery and selflessness, or the heartache we feel for your loss. God bless and keep you always.

To The Family: I have never met a soldier that did not want American's to enjoy life and their freedoms on any given day. Likewise, I know that your family will never replace the loss of 'our' hero Petty Officer 3rd Class NAthan Bruckenthal and today is a time for me to let you know, that I am grateful and humbled by his bravery. I will do my part to preserve our American freedoms and I will pray that you will allow God to give you comfort as you make it through each day and that my life will honor his sacrifice. My prayers for our leaders and our country include regaining a moral grounding, much like the guards pledge that protect the grounds of the unknown soldier. With love and humble appreciation!

Just reading this today, May 11, 2010, breaks my heart. Even as years have past, I am sure the pain is still there but we have to hold onto the memories until we see our loved ones again. My son, Mike Sawyer (Dallas, GA), also served in the US Coast Guard and was stationed in Homer, Alaska. My heart goes out to you all and I will keep you in my prayers.

My son was in the Coast Guard and we have spoken about you many times. Many people don't appreciate the role that the Coast Guard plays in defending our country but we are acutely aware. I also lost a cousin in Iraq. Ashley Henderson was killed on patrol just six weeks away from returning home to her new husband. My heartfelt prayers go out to you and your family. Thank You for giving everything you had to defending our country and the people that you love. You will never be forgotten. God bless you.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to PO3C Nathan B. Bruckenthal our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Nathan. And to Nathan it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the U.S. Coast Guard and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Nathan, you are a brave Sailor, a Patriot Warrior and true Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,385 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Nathan’s family and loved ones.

Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Nathan in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathies.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Nathan, but I am remembering on
this day he gave his all.
He is my hero.

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Love Lives On

Those we love remain with us
for love itself lives on,
and cherished memories never fade
because a loved one's gone.
Those we love can never be
more than a thought apart,
far as long as there is memory,
they'll live on in the heart.

The Landstuhl Hospital Care Project has honored Petty Officer Bruckenthal with shipments of care and comfort items to wounded troops in military hospitals stateside and overseas including CSH and field medical units. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I was roommates with Patty & Nate prior to his first deployment to Iraq. He served in Iraq with my child's father and Patty was a true friend during my pregnancy. Some of the first pictures of my daughter crawling are with Nate trying to get her attention. He always called her "little pun" after her father. I will cherish those memories and I want to wish Patty well and hope she and that beautiful baby girl are doing good. My deepest condolences to Nate's family. Dear Nathan was my "baby" cousin...I knew him to always be a sweet-natured, loving child who grew up to be a wonderful, kind, and loving man...and because of his nature he was not only adored by his family and friends but by all people he encountered along on his way to short journey through this life.

He was blessed by his relationship with Pattie and he was absolutely devoted to this woman who is an amazingly strong and loving woman. While his death is a tragedy, it's a comforting to know that he loved well and was loved well. His legacy will live on in those who write about him and remember him...and of course in their precious daughter Harper. At three months when I saw her, she was just the most serene, beautiful, sweet child (obviously just like her parents) and I urge all who knew Nate to offer your wonderful memories of him so that Harper can know all about this sweet spirit and his acts of kindness.

Our heart and prayers to Laurie, Patti, Noa, Dad and brothers. In the time that we did get to spend with Nate, we will remember forever. His kindness was always welcoming and will never be forgotten. I was looking forward to seeing Nate and Patti making Washington State home again. I hope Patti and the baby still do. Our Condolences to the family, and all the close friends he has come to know in such a short lifetime. We will miss him very much.

Deepest simpathy to the Bruckenthal family and Aunty Laurie. I will always remember all the fun times that we had together. I will never forget his smile, his laugh, or his personality. We will miss him terribly. I'm really lucky to have met him and Patty.
