Norman Schwartz Obituary

SCHWARTZ - Dr. Norman, 84.Dr. Norman Schwartz peacefully passed away at his home in Rock Hill, NY on July 9, 2009. He was born in the Bronx in 1924, the youngest son of the late Louis and Sophie Schwartz. He graduated from Dewitt Clinton High School, where he was student body president and captain of the basketball team, before earning his Bachelor's Degree at Union College, his M.A. from Columbia, and his Doctor of Education from NYU. During World War II, he served in the Pacific on the U.S.S. Massachusetts. He had a distinguished career as an educator in the New York State public school system as a teacher, basketball coach, guidance counselor, principal, and administrator. He served for 19 years as Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education in Syosset until 1986, and then served as Superintendent in Warwick, Middletown and Ellenville, where he had begun his teaching career and met the love of his life, Jean. He is survived by Jean (Robinson, his wife of 57 years, his children Richard, Lee (Christine) Schwartz, and Lorraine (Greg) Pritchard, his brother Jack(Betty) Schwartz, and five grandchildren, Jonathan and David Schwartz and Eric, Curt, and Sara Pritchard. His brother Stan Schwartz preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held at Garlick Funeral Home at 388 Broadway in Monticello, NY on Tuesday, July 14, at 11:00am. I was saddened to hear of Dr. Schwartz' passing. Although its been quite some time since I saw Dr. Schwartz he has held a special place in my heart. He was one of my favorite adults at Syosset High School and I have very fond memories of him. One was when he accompanied the Symphonic Band to Romania. He said he was keeping an eye on me even as he pretended to push me off a wall at Dracula's castle. He was easy to talk to and challenged me to think. I know there are many students in Syosset whose lives he touched over the years. I am grateful to be one of them. My sincere condolences to all his family.

When the Schwartz family moved around the corner from me in 7th grade my life changed forever. I have nothing but the fondest memories of “Doc” Schwartz. He was someone I looked up to. His wit and intelligence was daunting to me from day one.
He was a man who worked his art of being “crafty”, and I try to follow his example to this day.

Doc was a sports legend in Lee’s and my crowd. Either tennis, touch football or basketball; he was smooth and always cool under pressure. Of course the most frustrating to us was his inability to loose at ping pong; he would just return, and return, and return everything we would hit over the net at him.

I would say my least favorite memories of Doc Schwartz was when I would have a paper or some other school project do, it would snow 4 or 5 feet, I would then crack a beer because school would be closed the next day, but no such luck! School was never, ever closed because of snow in Syosset when he was at the helm. No amount of begging or pleading would sway him from his mission of keeping us in school.

Doc Schwartz was a gentle-man that had great influence on me. I can’t imagine anyone that has not been in contact with him either as a student, a coworker, a neighbor or a friend that is not saddened by his passing, and realized their blessing at knowing him.

I speak for all of Norman's family and especially his grandchildren when I say that he will be deeply missed. He was a wonderful grandfather and was loved dearly by his family and friends. I will always cherish all of the adventures that we went on together during my childhood. Whether it was a canoe ride, deer-stalking, going for a swim (a "shark attack"), or spending the day at Yankee Stadium in the Big Apple, we always had a blast together and he went above and beyond to ensure that. I love him very much and will never forget all of the valuable lessons that he taught me. He is in a comfortable place now.

Rest in peace Grandpa AKA "The Shark".

I worked with Dr. Schwartz in the Middletown School District and will always remember him as a kind, intelligent man who could gently guide and teach you. I will never forget the difference between "less" and "fewer" because of Dr. Schwartz.
