I'm very sorry for your loss. I grew up in Woodside and knew Pat, Darby and there Mom. I think possibly if my memory serves me right that my dad a retired ny police officer helped Pat study for the police exam.Pat also played baseball for the woodside incas who my dad managed and my late brother babe also played for.I was the bat boy. This bat boy is now 76 years young.

I first met Mr Dent at Corpus Christi Church where he asked me about my son who has autism: he had observed him during the mass. He was kind and compassionate at a time when sometimes all I got were disapproving stares. I met him next at the library where we discovered a common link- his brother and nephews were Queens Village people, as was I- the name was very familiar. He was always so pleasant and interested in the people around him. I admired him as I saw him in the community- at the pool every day, by the fireplace at the library. It made me feel as though I missed out, never having seen him in the classroom: I have a feeling he must have touched alot of lives- I know he touched mine. God bless his family. Mary (Wilson) Murtha

I just learned today of Mr. Dent's passing. He was my home room teacher for all of my HS years at NHP. I became his "helper" typing (on mimeograph paper if you can imagine) his tests for his Social Studies students. It was an honor to be asked and a pleasure to do it for him since he was such a sweetie. I was the "new kid" in 10th grade, and he made me feel welcome. To this day I remember him marching us army style thru the halls to assemblies in "a column of twos" chanting cadence as we went. He was a wonderful man, loved by all. My condolences to a great man's family.

Hello everyone,
My family and I just wanted to let you know that we are seeing all these entries, and are overwhelmed by your kind words!! The last 3-4 days were rough but, as you might imagine, were definitely filled with laughter as well. We knew he was loved by the NHP'ers, but couldn't grasp to what extent...now we can. The stories, one-liners, nicknames, etc. that we have read here, on Facebook, and heard in-person really made this time easier for all of us. He really loved his life and you were all such a huge part of it. Thanks again, and enjoy your lives like he did his.

My condolences to the Dent family. I was very fortunate to have Mr. Dent for two years. Patrick Dent should be the standard by which all teachers are measured. He was able to mix kindness, compassion and humor into his teachings. He taught not only history ,but life lessons. Those truly were the best years of our lives. Not because we were young and didn't have a care in the world, but because we had someone like Mr. Dent in our lives. I almost became a history teacher because of Mr. Dent. I still have a love of history because of him RIP my friend, heaven is a little richer today now that you are there.

I had Mr. Dent over 20 years ago. Like hundreds, probably thousands, of former students, I loved his class. He was one of the greatest teachers I've ever had. He created a classroom where everyone was treated with compassion, dignity and respect - with a giant heap of infectious humor. There were many days where I sat in tears during Mr. Dent's class - from laughing so hard at something he had said. He will be missed. I hope that you all find comfort after your loss.

Simply put-he was the man. I was lucky enough to have him 2 years in a row. We argued politics, religion & sports. And of course, he was right & kicked my butt on every topic and on the basketball court. He was a teacher, in & out of the classroom. Forty years later and I still use his sayings and jokes. He will be missed and he will be remembered fondly. Rest in peace and thank you for everything.

Mr.Dent, What a wonderful person! Always made each of his students feel special. Tried his best to instill good character building and life lessons into each days lesson plan. I'm sure there was not a student that went thru his class that was not touched by him in that special way. To his family, our hearts go out to you, but hope you find peace knowing that Mr.Dent has touched the lives of thousands of individuals that still to this day (20 years later)can remember him and his laugh and how Great a Person he was. He is the only teacher I can remember from my NHP days. May God provide you comfort that only he can provide!

A sad day but so many happy memories! A great teacher but greater friend and human being! Treated us all with respect and dignity. We are all better for having spent just one day with Mr. Dent whether it was in his class, on the court, or at Shea. They were truly "the best days of our lives". Codolences to the Dent family.

RIP Mr. Dent and God Bless you always. You were truly one of the greats at NHP and I will never forget how you touched my life and so many others. I spent many days at NHP with you for homeroom and lucky enough to have you twice for Social Studies. Your little jokes and funny sayings remain a part of my thoughts as if you said them just yesterday. You were truly a wonderful, kind, compassionate man who was a great teacher as well. You made coming to your class fun and each and every one of us felt special because we knew how much you cared. I loved how you called us "lammie" and how you made each of us smile and laugh everyday. Every person who knew you, can still recite your "bit" word for word more than 20 years later. That's a testament to your awesomeness! My favorite saying, "You lucky ducks, these are best years of your life..." is truly something I will never forget and boy were you so right! We just didn't know it then! I am so thankful I was one of your "lucky ducks"!

Heaven has gained another angel. Your devotion to your students and interest in their success was paramount. The class of 1993' NHPMS holds you close to our hearts. Who knew I would have a teacher that not only went to college with my mom, but played 4 wall handball with my grandfather in Rockaway back in the day. RIP Mr. Dent

My condolences to the family of a great man, Pat Dent. He always made my son and daughter feel special on trips to Shea Stadium, and he even helped me to re-enter the stadium after I was thrown out for diving on the field for a foul ball (a memory I'll take to my grave!). Rest well Mr. Dent, you've earned it!
