Richard Bernstein Obituary

BERNSTEIN - Richard K., 86, of Hicksville, NY, on Saturday, April 5, 2008. He was a WWII veteran, serving as lieutenant in the US Coast Guard. A dedicated public servant, Mr. Bernstein was Executive Director of the NYC Planning Dept. and the NYC Public Development Corp., and Director of the Midtown Manhattan Redevelopment Project. He was a longtime member and former Chair of PEIR, a lifelong-learning program at Hofstra University, where he developed and taught courses in US history, government and world affairs. Married for 60 years, he enjoyed canoeing, cross-country skiing, and traveling with his late wife, Gloria. Mentor, advisor, and beloved father to Merri Bernstein Neidorff, Peter Bernstein, and Kenneth Bernstein, he is also survived by their spouses and 7 loving grandchildren. Donations may be made to Hospice Care Network of Woodbury, NY, or Doctors Without Borders. Services at Gutterman's Memorial Chapel, Woodbury, NY, April 11, at noon.
