Russell Banigan Obituary

Banigan - Russell 66, of Syosset, and recently Braintree, MA, passed away January 7, 2023. He was born October 30, 1956 in Glen Cove to Edward and Elizabeth (Walsh) Banigan.

Russell, who grew up in Rockville Centre, graduated from St. John's University in 1978 and Pace University in 1987. He worked as a CPA, including nearly 30 years with Deloitte. Sending my condolences to the Banigan Family. I have very fond memories of working with Russ during our days with Deloitte at the World Trade Center. I remember his great sense of humor.

I had the pleasure of working with Russ, the ultimate professional. Russ was a leader in state and local taxation, particularly for financial service companies. He was always ready and able to help when asked, even after he became ill (we called him at home). Most of all, Russ was very well liked by his colleagues, clients and competitors.

My husband and I are very grateful for our friendship with Russ's son Ed and we were blessed to meet and enjoy our time with his father and family at Ed and Kim's wedding. Love and condolences to the family at this difficult time.

It is difficult to overstate the contribution Russ made to the tax profession in New York. He welcomed all requests for help and never failed to give you a technical answer with authority, or a better alternative approach, sound business advice, or to otherwise send you in the right direction. He was our go-to guy when the going got tough. This brilliant tax professional was always making us laugh at the delightful paradoxes only he could identify. He was also a personal friend to so many of his professional colleagues.

It was my distinct pleasure to work for Russ during my early and formative years in the profession. He was the best mentor anyone could ever hope to have both professionally and personally. His intellect was only matched by his integrity, and his standards live on in the firm to this day. Farwell old friend.
