Ruth Lyon Obituary

LYON-Ruth F. of Huntington, NY, on May 21, 2004. Born in Worcester, MA, on March 8, 1932, she graduated from Colby College in 1953 with high honors in mathematics. She applied her love of math and engineering as a systems analyst during the earliest days of computing at MIT and then at GE in the Missile and Space Division. She then began a career with Fairchild Space and Defense Systems in Syosset working on the design and development of military reconnaissance camera systems. In 1978, while working full time and raising two children, she earned an MBA from Hofstra with high honors. After 35 years of breaking ground for women in her field, she retired as a Senior Project Manager from Fairchild/Loral in 1996. Her active social life was woven around the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Huntington (UUFH) where she was a longtime member and past President. She dedicated much of her time there to supporting the financial integrity of the organization, and in advocating for causes of women's rights and social justice. Throughout her life, but especially during recent years of ill health, she was nurtured and loved by the family of friends that had grown around her over the years on Long Island, for which her children are eternally grateful. Beloved mother of Katherine Lyon Daniel, Ph.D., Atlanta, Georgia, and Thomas Richard Lyon, M.D., Brooklyn, NY, caring sister to Richard A. Flagg, USAF-Ret., Denver, Colorado, loving grandmother to Frank Lyon and Alden Daniel, and special friend to many. A celebration of her life and memorial service will be Thursday, May 27th, 4PM, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Huntington (UUFH), 109 Browns Road, Huntington, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the UUFH, Planned Parenthood or the American Cancer Society.
