Salvatore Colombo Obituary

COLOMBO Salvatore (Sonny), age 74 of Elmont and Southampton, NY; Delray Beach, FL; and Negril, Jamaica. Beloved brother of Carole Marquart, Buddy (Joseph), and Vinnie; brother-in-law to Al, Janet, and Anita Santasier; Uncle to Perry (Josh) and Corey (Ronnie), Cassie, Jay (Natalie) and Lisa (Nebil), and Luke; Great Uncle to Lena and Amelia; Godfather to Debbie Andersen, Bree McKenna and Jay; and special to so many life-long friends, both here in the states and in Jamaica. A fixture in the restaurant/bar industry for many years, he co-owned Phineas T's (Oceanside), The Smithville Café (Bellmore), The Deep Six (Island Park), and was a renowned bartender at the Driver's Seat in Southampton. Never an advocate of the work-consumed life, Sonny was well known for his "art of leisure living". He loved the beach and good times, and gave as many laughs as he received. Just prior to his passing, Sonny expressed no regrets, saying that, "life owes me nothing. I did all the things I ever wanted to do, and many that I probably shouldn't have." When people talk of their encounters with him, it usually starts with a smile and ends in a swell of laughter. Rest well Sons, it was a great ride. In lieu of a wake and funeral, Sonny wished to be cremated and his ashes scattered on Delray, Negril and Jones Beaches. There will be a celebration of his life in the near future. Stay tuned.

I just wanted to say how much Sonny meant to me. I enjoyed so many dinners and great stories with him. He was always in a great mood. He adored his friends. He loved my date-nut bread and told me not to forget to bring the cream cheese. He will be so, so missed. Nelia Costello

The last time I saw your brother was at Joe Alabrandi's funeral. The mention of his name always brought a smile to the Scala & Gioeni family. My condolences to the Columbo family, Buddy, Vinnie & Carole. As a young kid I always enjoyed going to to the Columbo home, being welcomed by Joe and Lena and watching my parents and grand parents and the family in general interact.
