I just came across this "guest book". I learned of Steve's passing at our medical school class reunion about a year ago. Thinking back on those four years at medical school, I have many images in my mind where Steve wore a huge smile. It doesn't surprise me a bit when I read the notes left by so many of the lives whom he has touched. It does make me envious. Steve truly succeeded in his role as a husband, a father, and a caring physician. In my life, I will always think of Steve when I ponder my life's goals. We are all blessed by having known him.

I just found out today (January 24, 2008)that Dr. Engrassia passed seven months ago. Needless to say I am shocked. I first met him when he was a resident at LIJ, at worked there at the time. Years later, he became our family doctor.....he even took care of my mother, who adored him as well. My husband considered him a very close friend.....he even invited Dr. Engrassia to a much celebrated birthday party. We moved out of the area several years ago and it's been a while since we saw him. We're so saddened to hear of his death. He was truly a wonderful person to his patients and treated my mother absolutely wonderful. My prayers are with his family.

My father passed away this August, John Varesio, from a massive heart attack. I was reading his guest book, when I came across Dr. Engrassia. I only meet Dr. Engrassia once, since I was a new patient of his. I selected Dr. Engrassia to be my doctor because of his reputation. I am sad that he was taken away so soon....so many more people like myself wanted to benefit from his expertise & kind disposition. The one time I met him, he was so busy and kept me waiting an hour. I never met a Doctor so apologetic. I was happy to have found him, and am sad to lose him. 2007 took the lives of some extraordinary men...

Dear Engrassia Family

Our expressions of sympathy is sincere in what we feel with the loss of our dear doctor, friend and advisor. Dr. E as we knew him was such a force in our life that we are at a complete loss as to how we will go on feeling medically secure. He took exceptional care of our mother who he administered to the age if 90 in a manner of such a beautiful relationship that her passing was so spiritual and peaceful knowing Dr. E had made the last days of her life the result of his care ...loving and peaceful.

We remember the time he even brought his children to visit with his favirite patient in the hospital at St. Francis Hospital because she had encouraged him to start a family many years before.

We would each spend many minutes before examination reflecting on the progress of his family.

When our Mom passed it became a moment of reflection on her and what his children were doing before our examinations.

Oh God bring us another Dr. E so we can feel the confidence of a man in this world on our medical behalf or bring us the spirit of You to give us the cure of whatever may ail us.

To the Family our love and condolences

I was shocked and saddened upon hearing the news of Dr. Engrassia’s passing, which I found out only yesterday when I called to make an appointment. My husband, Juan, and I were Dr. Engrassia’s patients since 1995. He was an excellent doctor whom we trusted completely, but he was also a kind, sensitive and gentle person. After my husband died in 2005, he was a comforting presence. My daughter, also a patient, will never forget that on Dr. Engrassia’s advice, she canceled her scheduled vacation and was able to spend the last weeks of her father’s life with him. We will miss him very much. Our deepest sympathy to the family.

My Heartfelt condolensces to the Engrassia Family. He was not only my Dr. but also my older brother's who had passed away 2 years ago. Unlike most Dr.s, in the field Dr. Engrassia sent a mass card and wrote a letter to my family which I will never forget. He was not only a Dr. but a friend. He loved those yankees and more importantly loved his children and wife. I will miss him telling me how to live longer. God called on a wonderful man......He will be missed but not forgotten...................Thank you Dr. Engrassia.........Gary Calleo..Pt Washington

I was deeply sadden and shocked when I opened my mail and found out about the sudden passing of Dr. Engrassia. I had to read the letter three times. I became a patient of Dr. Engrassia many years ago when he was in practice with Dr. Cohen. He helped my husband also when he was going thru a difficult time. He was a great doctor and family man. You knew because every waiting room in his office had pictures of his children. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, children and family. He will be missed.

I just want to express my sympathy to the beautiful children, wife and famly of Dr.Steven Engrassia. Dr. E was doctor for many years before I moved to Florida four years ago. Dear Dr. E was rare. He cared. You could always see the caring in his face. I can remember times when I needed to speak to him about something important and 10pm he would call and apologize that he was with patients until now. If I could not make a decision and wanted to put my head in the sand,he would say get a second opinion. Dr. E was not only my doctor, but my friend. I will miss him and hope whereever he is, he knows the difference he made and the love that so many have for him. Rest in Peace Dear healer, dear friend.

My husband and I just heard about Dr. Engrassia passing away. This is a terrible tragedy for so many people, especially you, his family. We are so sorry for your loss. We moved to Florida almost 2 years ago and one of the things we missed the most was having Dr. E for our doctor. his children should be so proud to have had such a wonderful caring man for their father. He was quite rare, a very special person. He is truly missed.

To Dr. Engrassia's Family:
I know words cannot console the loss you must feel. But hopefully you carry with you the memories of what a wonderful man Dr. E. was and how he helped so many people. I really don't know who to see now that he is gone, no doctor will ever match the wonderful, professional nature of Dr. E. Although it must be tough, try and be thankful that you were loved by such a great man for the time he was here with you. He will always be in my thoughts, and all of his patients' hearts.
I remember the first time I saw Dr. E. and he said "no other doctor ever told you you have a murmur?" Thank God for him and for my luck at finding him!

To The Family Of Dr.Engrassia
I cannot express to you our deepest sympathies. Our family has been patients of Dr. E since he began his practice. Some stayed within the area and others moved a distance but we all remained his patients.Although we felt like dear friends I guess that was another gift Dr Engrassia had he made us feel special. Two weeks ago I drove in from Orient to take our 91 year old mother to the office and I could not expresss the sadness ane the emptiness we felt. There will never be another doctor like him and none who we will have history with.We have shared marraiges, the births of children, the passing of loved ones and many years of just talk. He was the best and how lucky we were.

Dear Family of our Beloved Dr. E.

I have personally known Dr. E. for more than 20 years. We met when he first started his practice in Great Neck (38 Northern Blvd). I went there with my parents. My Dad called him "Young Dr. Steve". It was he who diagnosed my Dad with a "leaky valve"; the patience and compassion he showed towards him will never be forgotten. He respected my father's choice to not have surgery. He advised him of what was to be (eventually). He treated him as he would his own Dad. He helped save my Mom's life when she was literally wasting away from celiac disease and did not know it. I could go on and on with examples of his brilliance, his excellent diagnostic skills, his bedside manner; but more than all of that, his humanity, his generosity, his humor, his caring, his selflessness, his determination to get to the bottom of a malady. My sister said that he was the only doctor who told her to "forget about his fee"! Imagine, in this day and age, he sure did give back! His love of his family was evident. He and my husband spoke "Yankee talk" all the time. My husband cannot see another doctor because "Only Dr. Steve understands him and his blood pressure". Needless to say, we are all devastated; my sisters, my Mom (91 years old) We feel your loss; we share your sorrow. I hope and pray it will help to know that he was well loved and well-respected by all. He cared about his patients. I cannot imagine what that office is like without him. I cannot imagine what your home is like without him. To say he will be missed is such an understatement. The world is missing one of its brightest stars, but Heaver has gained a bright star. We now all have an Angel we know watching over us knowing that he is going to guide us along our journey until we all meet again. We were so sorry we didn't learn of his passing until after the services. We definitely would have attended. Please accept our deepest, most heartfelt sympathy and know that you are all in our prayers and thoughts. To his children, you were his life! No matter what was bothering him, his face lit up when he spoke of you. I remember when each of you were born. How lucky you are to have had such a Dad. To his Mom, you raised the most special child --who became a most special man. To his wife -- I wish you strength to go on for your children. They need you. God bless you all.
Sincere sympathy,

In 1992, at the age of 40, I contacted chicken pox. After being released from a hospital's emergency room (without significant treatment) I sought medical attention elsewhere. This is when I met Dr. Engrassia. Under his care, I was immediately hospitalized because my condition included pneumonia and hepatitis. My 8 day stay was made tolerable because of the ever-present Dr. Engrassia. His words of encouragement and his extraordinary "bedside manner" were far more beneficial than any medicines I was taking. Because of the severe outbreak of chicken pox all over my face and body, other doctor's wouldn't even see me. Like Mickey Mantle would have, Dr. Engrassia stepped up to the plate big time !!! During the last 15 years, I always looked forward to my appointments with Dr. Engrassia, no matter what medical issues I had. There was always a good few minutes of sports talk (especially about the Yankees) prior to my exam. Most of all, I will miss Dr. Engrassia's compassion that he exhibited for his patients. I was truly lucky to have known him for the last 15 years. My wife was also a patient and our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, children, and staff. He has touched many lives and will be greatly missed.

Dear Aunt Betty and family,
Yesterday I received an email from Margaret telling me about Stephen. I am still shocked. I'm not sure if you know that my parents, Donald and Vivian Auerbach, were patients of Stephen and at the time they didn't even know "Dr Engrassia" was Margarets cousin. What a coincidence. I thank him for taking such good care of them during difficult times in their lives. And on a personal note, I know how much he was loved by Margaret and Lisa. Take care of yourself Aunt Betty!! To the Family of Dr. Engrassia,
As a patient of Dr. Engrassia's for over 10 years I cannot tell you how deeply saddened and shocked I was to learn of his passing. He touched my life in a special way. He diagnosed my V-tach some 10 years ago and saved my life. He supported me during my gastric bypass and saved my life again. He supported me when I would come to him for an ear ache or my heart. He was always there. Our last coversation was around his son Steven's college plans. He was already excited about all four of his children going to college. He spoke about you all with great love in his heart and he shared your stories with us as we shared ours with him. He was so proud of each of you.
I want you all to know how, in his daily life, he made a difference in hundreds of lives, all the time keeping his eye on the most important things to him...all of you. He even spoke about his mother and where he grew up. I looked long and hard to find Dr. Engrassia. He is not a man to be replaced. He filled a room when he walked into it and he was not afraid to stand up for what he believed in.
You are all in my prayers and in my thoughts.
I am so so sorry for your loss.

Marlene Nuwesra

June 15, 2007

My daughter-in-law and I were both patients of Dr. Engrassia for the past year. I thought he was one of the most kindest, and most caring human beings that I had ever known, and speaking to him was just like speaking to a good friend, more than just a doctor. He had a great sense of humor also. To his family, from myself and Elyse, our deepest sympathies to you on your terrible loss. He will surely be missed, and will always be remembered. He touched my heart with his kindness, as I am sure he has touched so many other hearts.

Cathy, Steve, Theresa, Lizzie, Michael and Mrs. E,
There is nothing I can say that will convey my sympathies and feelings of loss. Steve was a good man who took care of my mother when she had a stroke. He gave her excellent care even though she was 1,100 miles away and he never asked for a dime.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers!
I'm sure I'll see you soon.
Love,

Dr.Engrassia treated my mother since she had a heart attack in 1987
and I became his patient soon after
He was one of the nicest people I have ever met im my entire life He was more concerned about my health then I was. We had recently started looking for a building for his practice and he would call me with buildings he had seen on his own instead of just contacting another broker that's the kind of guy he was. We will never forget him and will keep him and his family in our prayers always.

I cannot even find the words to describe my sense of loss. My husband, of almost 51 years, is only here due to the skils and expertise of Dr E. We were never just patients - he realy KNEW us as individuals and as a couple - he was a friend as well. I only hope his children will follow in his footsteps.
My heart goes out to all of you.

To the family of Dr. E, friends and staff,
I was shocked to hear the news of his passing. He had been my boss, mentor and dear friend for the past 15 years. The is no words to describe the loss we all feel. He always spoke of the beauty and intelligence of his family, and always made his staff and patients feel like family. With his vast knowledge he healed and he always taught and showed compassion.
My sympathies to all.

I was in total shock when I heard about Dr.E passing. I had just called him the other day.He was a wonderful person, he helped me so much after my husband had his heart attack. My husband has severe brain damage, because he didn't receive help right away. He spoke to the EMTs and the doctors. He was very concern about his patient.
After months of rehab, he's better now.But everytime I would go for my checkups, he would always ask how's Glenn?
I later developed heart problems too and he took real good care of me.He always had a big smile on his face, everytime he came to see you in the hospital.
I'm trully going to miss that man.

To Dr.Engrassia family
My mom & dad and whole family were patients of Dr.E . He was always caring and understanding. He always had reassuring words for my mom when she was very sick.Alaways put a smile on my moms face.He was a great docter and a great man. Rest in peace DR.Engrassia

You will be missed!!

Tony Prainito

June 13, 2007

Dr. Engrassia was my doctor and more than that my friend. He made me feel that my health was as important to him as it was to me.It is so rare in this day and age to come across a man and doctor who was not only capable but kind, compassionate and caring.
We both shared a love for music. I made cds that I thought he would like and he called me at home to tell me how much he did. He also called me with concern after I lost my daughter and mom within three months in the same year. He was worried about how I was coping and gave me good advice when I could not think clearly. He was in a class by himself and he truly touched my heart.
It seems that God takes the angels that are here on earth much too soon before their time. Steve was one of those angels and I will miss him and the presence he had in my life.

As a doctor who took care of my father, and the rest of my family, he went above and beyond what a doctor would do. He was a wonderful human being.

I was a patient of Dr. Engrassia and so shocked and saddened to hear of this. He was not only a terrific doctor, but most importantly and kind and compassionate human being. The world weeps with you and your family.

To Mrs Engrassia and Family:
Diane and I are deeply saddened and shocked to learn that Steven has left all of us, Family, friends and patients, so soon.
He was a caring and concerned family man and Doctor. He always spoke of you and the children. We always felt that he cared as much for his patients as he did his own Family and for that we feel blessed.
An irreplacable Husband, Father, friend and Doctor.

Mrs. Engrassia and family,
The many expressions from
Dr. Engrassia's patients were truly heartwarming. I come from a different perspective as a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative calling on him for the past 4 1/2 years. I want you to know that the Doctor was a remarkable physician with a skill and dedication to his profession that we all would like to see in doctors. He also had a great love for life and family, that made him truly unique. I recall introducing him to AltaDonna Restaurant at one of our dinner meetings and he really demonstrated a love for a wide range of subjects and the Sicilian culture.
My heatfelt sympathy to you and the family. He truly will be missed.

Dear Mrs. Engrassia,
I am so sorry to hear of your tragic loss. He was the most wonderful, compassionate doctor I have ever known, and i knew him over 20 years. There are no words to describe the loss to your children and all the patients who loved him.

To Mrs Engrassia and Family,
Members of my family have been patients of Dr. Engrassia for over 13 years. During that time, we have come to regard him not only as a talented and caring physician, but a good friend as well.

Back in November, he identified a blocked artery in my heart and determined that I had a mild heart attack. He immediately arranged for an angioplasty and stent insertion the next morning. I believe he saved my life.

While immensely sadded at your immeasurable loss, you should feel blessed that your family had him as a husband and father. I certainly feel blessed to have had him as my doctor and friend.

God bless you all.

A doctor's doctor, a true master of the science and art of medicine, in an age of technicians and bureaucrats. Utmost gentleman, loving husband, wonderful father, truest of friends. Humanity is poorer without him.

My sister meet Dr. Engrassia in 1987, when she had a stroke. We were so impressed with the level of care she received from Dr. Engrassia, that he became our family doctor. Through the years, he was always available day or night, not only with his excellent medical knowledge but also with his understanding and reassuring words. Office visits were like seeing someone who really cared, as a doctor and a friend. We will miss him greatly. Our prayers and sympathies are with his entire family and friends
