Vincent Chopard Obituary

Chopard - Vincent Joseph, age 74, of Calabash, NC passed away suddenly on November 4, 2022 surrounded by loved ones. He is survived by Susan, his wife of 51 blissful years, his children Thomas and Lisa, David, Mary and Noah and his granddaughters Caitlin and Morgan. Vincent was born in Westbury, NY and raised his family in Glen Cove, NY.

Vincent was a pillar of the Glen Cove community; he taught for decades at the Robert M. Finley Middle School and coached the Glen Cove High School Big Red football team. He touched innumerable lives over the years through his love of teaching. He loved children of all ages, inside and outside of the classroom, and was always first to volunteer to be Santa. His joie de vivre was infectious and unparalleled; he brought joy to all whose paths he crossed. He spent his retirement years in Calabash, NC where he loved golfing, travel and hosting Trivia night. Truly sorry to hear of Mr. Chopard's passing. I had the honor of being on the Chopard Team in 6th grade and his class was always a riot while also educational. I hope the memories and his laughter will comfort his family at this time.

My condolences to the Chopard family. Mr. Chopard touched so many lives in Glen Cove, including mine. He was my 5th grade teacher, the year my dad passed away. I will always be greatful for his kind words during what was a tough year. He'll always be remembered and will always be missed. May light perpetual shine upon him. Rest in peace, Mr. Chopard. Rest in peace.

Dear Chopard Family,
The true measure of a person and their time on earth is how many lives they touched, how many people will remember them fondly. I´m sure you´ve received many, many such sentiments from countless people, many you might not even know. I´m another. 47 years ago I walked into Glen Cove Middle School. Awkward does not begin to describe me. I was only 10 years old as I was a year ahead in school and a very late bloomer on top of that. I was painfully shy, self conscious and lacking self esteem. My way of coping and getting through the day was tuning out. I´d draw and daydream in class. Stare out the window. My grades were awful and I actually had teachers yell at me and embarrass me in front of my classmates. This incited horrible teasing. I was sent to a neurologist to check for a petit mal seizure disorder because I could go into my own world so deeply and ignore interruptions to it. I was sent for IQ tests which I scored very well on..I was just miserable. ONE teacher was a bright spot in school for 6th and 7th grade. Mr. Chopard. I loved the subject he taught, history, Aside from the class content, he made such a difference. His smile, personality and sense of humor made class and any interactions with him wonderful.I had no stomach aches in his class. I gave my full attention. He had a zero tolerance for any teasing so it was a safe place. He assessed my personality quickly and gently pulled me out of my shell. Not with intimidation but with patience. He encouraged me to participate slowly, never pushing me. Quickly I was raising my hand and voluntarily answering questions and speaking in class. Getting the only A´s of my middle school career! I have my BA and MS with a 3.8 and 4.0 GPA respectively...no more F´s! I became the youngest and first female Registrar of a large multi campus university and spoke every year at graduation to crowds of 20,000. Not shy anymore. I don´t know how much worse these middle school years would have been without him and how I might have become more withdrawn and may have experienced psychological damage I couldn´t overcome. Although I haven´t lived in Glen Cove for 16 years. I remember Mr. Chopard´s love of people, especially children, his coaching, motivating and easy going manner.
May his memory be remembered for a blessing.

My sincere condolences to the family on the loss of your loved one. May the God of all comfort be with you during your time of sorrow. Psalm 145:19 says "He satisfies the desire of those who fear him. He hears their cry for help and he rescues them"

One of the best educators. So devoted to teaching and his students between taking us to Frost Valley, Broadway, coaching and just opening the gym after school to play basketball. That is where "he broke" my first bone , it was an accident my picky got tub against the ball. And he taught the toughest grades and ages and made it look easy . Loved by everyone that was fortunate to know him.

This makes me so sad. Truly the only teacher I ever liked in the Glen Cove School system while I was growing up. You did your job well Mr . Chopard. You were memorable. You will be missed by all. RIP.....

Heartbreaking to hear about Mister Chopard. He was one of the main reasons I considered teaching and a big reason why I eventually chose Middle School English because of how much he taught me and just how much fun and engaging he made each class. He made learning so much fun and he was kind generous funny loud and just as good as they come. Thanks for all the memories and motivations Mister C. I will always appreciate them.

Mr. Chopard was my H.S. Football Coach. He reached out to me on Facebook and we exchanged admiration for one another. He wanted to know how I "beat the odds", I told him, because of people like him. Rest well, Mr. Chopard.
