William Laky

Laky - William R., 87, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025 with his loving family at his side. He grew up in New Hyde Park and attended Sewanhaka High School, class of 1955, where he was a member of the Football and Lacrosse Teams. He went on to get his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at Hofstra and was a defenseman on the varsity lacrosse team. While attending Hofstra, he was a proud member of the ROTC, Army Division, working his way up through the ranks to Captain before his honorable discharge. From there he went on to a 36 year career at Uniondale High School, teaching 10th Grade World History and Driver's Ed. His proudest professional accomplishment, he served as head coach of the lacrosse team, the Uniondale Black Knights. In this role he amassed 212 wins from 1964-1983, won several championships, mentored many All-Americans and left his mark on the sport on Long Island. In his later years, he enjoyed golf, fishing, gardening, traveling and photography. A generous man and philanthropist, he supported many different charities over the years. His love for his family was always at the core of everything he did. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Evelyn (nee Van Ness) of Farmingdale. His sister, Amanda Laky of Freeport. His eldest daughter, Karen Laky of Chevy Chase, MD. His son, Russell Laky and his wife Kettie S. Laky of Newbury, MA. His two grandson's, Paxton (17) and Tyler (15) Laky of Newbury, MA. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, among many other coaching colleagues, past players and dear friends. Visitation will be held at McCourt & Trudden Funeral Home, 385 Main Street, Farmingdale, NY on Thursday October 16, from 2-4pm and again 7-9pm with a brief service taking place at 8pm.
