George L. Edgerton

George L. Edgerton, 89, of Panama City Beach, Fla., died peace-fully Monday morning, Aug. 24, 2009, at his home with his loving wife in attendance.

He was born Aug. 14, 1920, in Goldsboro, N.C., the only child of Ro-land O. and Pauline Edgerton. He moved to the Florida Panhandle in 1986 after his retirement from Champion International Paper Co., where he retired as a director after a career of 45 years.

George was a founding member and longtime Sunday school teacher of Central United Methodist Church in Canton, N.C., and also held memberships in several civic clubs throughout his life. He served our country as a Navy Seabee during World War II in the Solomon Islands. He loved gardening, traveling, antiques and building projects.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his first wife, Marga-ret Hampton Edgerton. Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Carolyn M. Edgerton of Panama City Beach, Fla.; two children, Bill Edgerton of Brandon, Fla., and Susan Lee Schroeder and husband, Mike, of Lakeland, Fla.; three stepchildren, Michael Spence and wife, Anita, of Mays Lick, Ky., Chris Spence and wife, Amy, of Canton, Ga., and Greg Spence and wife, Cissy, of Jacksonville, Ala.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Edgerton will be cremated by choice. Memorial services will be held at a later date at Central United Methodist Church in Canton, N.C.
