James Purvis Obituary

James Carlton Purvis, 83, of Panama City, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2017.

He was born the son of L.D. and Ruby Kite Purvis in Enterprise, Alabama on May 15, 1933.

A longtime resident of Panama City, he retired as a Lieutenant from the Panama City Police Department after 20 years of service. During his law enforcement career, he served as a detective and Juvenile Officer having a positive impact on many lives. In February 2014, he and his son, Mike were awarded the rank of Captain of the Bay County Sheriff's Office by former Sheriff Frank McKeithen. He faithfully served his country with four years in the United States Air Force and 31 years in the United States Army Reserve.

Mr. Purvis will also be remembered for his gift of music having played in several gospel and country groups. This gift has been passed down to his son and grandson. One of his greatest joys was making music with his brothers, son and grandson.

He is preceded in death by his son, Jay Purvis, grandson, Michael Vaughan, brother, Rudolph Purvis, and sister, Louise Harbuck. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Rosemary Purvis, children, Mary Jo Jackson (Bill), Judy Purvis (James Hobbs), and Mike Purvis (Lynette), grandchildren, Emily Purvis, Wesley Purvis (Chrissy), Kimberly Dias (Dan), Megan Vaughan, Rachel Peters, Jonathan, Matthew and Logan Purvis, great-grandchildren, Riley and Mia Purvis, Peyton Newby, and Kyran Anderson, brother, Jimmy Purvis (Jeannette) and sister, Carolyn Stovall and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M. Friday, February 3, 2017 at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery.

A memorial page in memory of Mr. Purvis has been established at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and memorial contributions are preferred in lieu of flowers.
