John Gooding Obituary

1943 – 2020

John Mansell Gooding, O.D., 76, of Panama City, passed away August 20, 2020 at Gulf Coast Medical Center, Panama City, Florida.  He was born in Bangor, Maine on October 30, 1943 to his father, Ernest Alfred Gooding and mother, Alice MacLeod Gooding. John was preceded in death by both of his parents, his beloved grandmother, Vinette (Vinney/Nana), his sister, Mary Davis Gooding Clifford, his brother, Robert (Robbie)M. Gooding and his nephew, Bert Daniel Clifford. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Teresa Robinson Gooding and his three children, Shane MacLeod Gooding, Lauri Frances Gooding Golden (Karl), and Josh Henry Gooding, as well as his brother, Daniel Ernest Gooding (Kathryn) and his granddaughter, Emily Alice Gooding and grandson, Daniel Troy Gooding.

John graduated from Bangor High School in 1961 and joined the United States Marine Corps.  After serving his country, he attended the University of Maine at Orono, where he completed his degree in three years and went on to pursue his education at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he graduated in 1971 with a doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine.  John then completed an internship at Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio in 1972 and an anesthesia residency at the University of Alabama, where he remained until 1976, when he moved his family to New Orleans, Louisiana and completed an anesthesia fellowship, specializing in intensive care, at Tulane University.

John accepted a position at Gulf Coast Medical Center, Panama City, Florida for a short time but ultimately decided to settle in with Bay Medical Center in 1980 and remained an integral part of the medical community until his retirement in 2001.

Dr. Gooding was largely responsible for obtaining accreditation for the Bay Medical Center School of Nurse Anesthesia to become a single-purpose degree granting institution, offering a master's degree to those who complete the rigorous 28-month program, graduating as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.  The new institute, The Gooding Institute of Nurse Anesthesia,  produced many outstanding graduates over the years and a lot of those graduates chose to remain at Bay Medical Center and surrounding hospitals in our area.

John devoted many long hours to Bay Medical Center and was a fierce advocate for recognition and respect of the nursing staff. When he had leisure time, you could usually find him sitting on his deck at his beach home overlooking the Gulf of Mexico or reading the latest issue of the Journal of American Medicine Association as though it was an adventurous novel.  John touched many lives with his medical expertise and brilliant mind over the years

Due to an unfortunate accident in 2010, John has been in the care of the amazing staff at Clifford Chester Sims Veterans Nursing Home in Panama City since then.  The family will always be grateful for the wonderful care and compassion of everyone at Sims who took care of John.  Many thanks also to the excellent staff at Emerald Coast Hospice Care.

Due to Covid-19, there will be no remembrance ceremony.

My name is Mike Scott CRNA. I´m Littke Rick, Ar. . I attended CRNA school at Bay Medical Center from 1983-1985. Back in those years Dr. Gooding was a one man wrecking crew. No one could out worked him. He ran the SICU and was head of the anesthesia department concurrently. He could be your best friend or you´re worse enemy ...,.with me we were best friends. He was rough but damn good at what he did. Dr. Gooding had a photographic memory and had forgotten more about anesthesia than any other anesthesiologist I´ve ever worked with since 1985 I´m still working at the age of "70" and owe Dr. Gooding. Many thanks for what he taught me while in school. Only people who truly knew Dr. Gooding will find humor but truth in what I am about to say..,. In 40 years He was the best anesthesiologist I have ever encountered sober and the second best drunk. lol!! We all had a slight degree of fear for Dr. Gooding but at the same time tremendous amounts of respect. He was in fact the reason for Bay Medical Centers level of care for being as good as it was. 100% because of him. I think of him often and have so many Dr. Gooding stories. Rest in peace my friend and Tell our friend Stan Hicks hello for me. What a great 2 years of my life I had with you two guys! Mike

I went to Anesthesia school at Bay medical Center from 1985 to 1987. I had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Gooding during that time. He was very instrumental in my training. We had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Gooding and his particular style of training and practice. Dr. Gooding was exceptionally intelligent. His style of training and practice were, can I say, unique and different, but his patient’s well being was his utmost goal.
Thank you Dr. Gooding for all of the wonderful training that you gave me and my classmates. It was my blessing to get to work with you.
God bless you and your family.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the Gooding family. I worked at BMC and had occasional run ins with Dr. Gooding. He was a very intelligent man, larger than life in his prime years. I got the honor to take care of him while he was at Sim’s. We talked about the events of the world and the many people we both knew and worked with over the years in medical field. I will miss caring for him and him giving me a hard time. Thoughts and prayers for the family in the days ahead.

John Gooding was one of the great physicians associated with the original Bay Medical Center. He was a leader among his peers and a tireless advocate of quality patient care. His Gooding Institute trained many outstanding CRNAs thus contributing to the excellence in the practice of anesthesiology. He also knew more about nutritional medicine than most nutritionists. John has been and will continue to be missed.

I loved Dr. John. As was said, he was indeed a fierce advocate for recognition and respect of the nursing staff. I worked many years with him and though he had the persona of a gruff exterior, all who knew him, respected him and knew he was a loving teddy bear. Thank you for the memories. Rest in peace.

Dr Gooding was a great educator and mentor. I learned so much from him and would not have been where I am today without his help and influence during my time in his anesthesia program at Bay Medical. So glad I got to go by and visit with him at the VA the last time I was in PC in 2013.
