Nancy Moroney Obituary

Nancy Louise Moroney joined her son in heaven on August 25, 2016, after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Nancy was preceded in death by her loving son Steven. She is survived by her devoted husband John; four children Jenna Whitney of Arnold, Maryland, Chris Moroney of Melbourne, Florida, Melanie Resch of Panama City, Florida, and Sarah-Ann Fraatz of Shady Side, Maryland; and 10 grandchildren.

Nancy was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She moved to Somerville during high school where she met the man with whom she would ultimately spend the rest of her life. John and Nancy shared a love story that rivaled story books. John joined the Air Force after graduation, and he and Nancy wed shortly after on September 13, 1969. After six military assignments, Nancy and John settled in Panama City, Florida, with their five children.

Many of Nancy's happiest years were spent volunteering and eventually working at Tyndall Elementary School. While her youngest daughter was in school, Nancy became the PTA president and volunteered countless hours to help the school. She became a teacher's aide and worked alongside her friends for over a decade. She used her classroom to help children struggling with reading in different programs including Writing to Read and Read to Succeed. Her focus was with burgeoning readers in kindergarten and first grade, but she still volunteered extra hours to help the other students in the school. She made a positive impact on every child she met, and built friendships that would last a lifetime with her coworkers.

After retirement, Nancy moved with her husband to Arnold, Maryland. It was here that Nancy spent her final months. She fit a lot of life into those final months. She raised chickens alongside her favorite pet pug, Maggie. She filled her days with fun activities while she was able, including going to the drive-in, the theatre, and even amusement parks. Although her illness was terrible, she found ways to have fun. And through all of this, her caring husband was by her side.

A graveside service will be held at 9:00 a.m., Friday, September 9, 2016 at Buckhorn Cemetery in Wewahitchka, FL.

In lieu of flowers, the Moroney family asks that donations be made to either of the organizations that were such an important part of Nancy's life after her diagnosis: The Greater DC-Maryland Chapter of the MS Society or Hospice of the Chesapeake.
