Ray Mixson Obituary

Ray Harold Mixson, Jr. passed away peacefully on May 26, 2017, his 66th wedding anniversary, surrounded by family.

Born Feb. 21, 1928, in Savannah, Georgia, Ray was the only child of Ray H. Mixson, Sr. and Ruth Currie Mixson. An Eagle Scout, Ray graduated from Savannah High School, where he was a member of the state championship rifle team and a cheerleader. Ray entered the United States Army at the age of 18, and later graduated from Armstrong Junior College and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Emory University in 1952.

Ray married Kathryn Byrne Cocke in 1951, and they moved to Panama City in 1952 where he lived until 2015. He went to work for the Naval Coastal Systems Center, where he worked as a physicist in various capacities, until retiring in 1990 with a total of 40 years lifetime federal service. While he was no longer working in physics, Ray remained a lifelong learner and problem solver, forever fixing things, acquiring new gadgets and embracing the digital age and technology.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife of 48 years, Kathryn Cocke Mixson. He is survived by his three children, Bob (Vicky,) Greg (Sandy) and Lynne, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all among the many family and friends that loved him dearly.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017, at 11 a.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Neil Hickem officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Ray's memory to either Hearing Loss Association of America (Hearingloss.org) or Wycliffe Bible Translators (Wycliffe.org.)
