Bernard Romanoski Obituary

COAL TOWNSHIP — Bernard E. Romanoski Sr., 85, of 1322 Center St., died at 6:44 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, following a brief illness and surgery.

Bernie was a lifelong resident of the Shamokin-Coal Township community.

Born on Aug. 25, 1922, he was a son of the late Pauline Augustinovage and Albert (Jaroma) Romanoski.

Bernie enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, rose to the rank of sergeant, served in both the North African and Italian campaigns of World War II, and earned a Bronze Star for meritorious service in combat. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

He was a graduate of Coal Township High School and Mansfield State Teachers College, having earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in education.

Bernie began his employment in the Coal Township School District and subsequently the Shamokin Area School District serving in various positions, including administrative assistant, director of transportation, school disciplinarian, athletic director and attendance officer. He retired in 1986 after 33 years.

His affiliation with coal region sports was a prominent part of his life and spanned 70 years. His outstanding playing as tackle at Coal Township High School earned him all-state distinction. After World War II, he continued to play at the semi-pro level with the Anthracite Maroons.

His football coaching career began in 1949 at his beloved Coal Township High School, where as line coach he helped capture Eastern Conference titles in 1950 and 1955 and the Eastern Conference Southern Division titles in 1961 and 1964. His team's superior line play enabled many players to pursue outstanding careers at the collegiate level. His proudest athletic achievement was facilitating an athlete's opportunity to earn a degree of higher education.

He continued coaching at Shamokin High School until 1968, and during this time he coached football, basketball, baseball, track and golf.

As long-time Shamokin Area athletic director, he instituted many innovative ideas to advance athletic policy and improve facilities.

His love of athletics saw him sustain a 40-year career as a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association official. Certified in football, basketball and baseball, he worked numerous championship games in all three sports.

A lifelong promoter of high school sports, Bernie had a long career at both WISL and WETV, where his weekly shows provided a forum for coaches and community leaders.

Along with a cadre of coal region sport enthusiasts from the Shamokin-Mount Carmel area, Bernie helped breach the idea of bringing the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame to the Lower Anthracite region. A chapter in his name has been in existence since 1984.

His community service has touched all who reside in the Shamokin-Coal Township area. He has served with countless community-based organizations in numerous capacities to raise needed money for many causes. His most beloved causes included the Salvation Army, where he served as director; the American Heart Association; Shamokin Area Community Hospital; the Veteran's Association, and numerous radiothons and telethons he used to generate needed money for local charities.

Bernie was an unwavering promoter of both the Coal Township and Shamokin Area school districts at which he was proudly employed. Even unto his death, he remained active in many school activities, both academically and athletically.

He was an active member of Our Lady of Hope Church, Coal Township, where he served as altar server and usher.

He took particular enjoyment spending time with his family, and was instrumental in both inspiring and assisting his children and grandchildren in career advancement.

He never lost his love for sports, and enjoyed attending high school and collegiate sporting events with his many friends and former coaches.

He was married on April 12, 1947 to his beloved wife, Ruth (Evans) Romanoski. They recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Bernie Jr. and Linda Romanoski of Coal Township and David and MaryLee Romanoski of Shamokin; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Kevin Miller of Westminster, Md.; seven grandchildren, Deb Kulenguskey and her companion Sam Dascani, Michael Romanoski, Ryan Romanoski, Katie Romanoski, Lauren Miller, Andrea Miller and Justin Miller; a great-granddaughter, Abby Kulengusky, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, John, and a sister, Anne.

Dear Friends, It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Coach R. He will always be a shining example of what coal region sports is all about! I regret, too, that circumstances have prevented me from being around for the Hall for too many years now. I am as proud of being in this group as anything I've accomplished. I am grateful for Coach taking me aside many times during my first year of teaching and coaching and giving me wisdom and guidance. He and Dad were great friends, and my Mom wept openly when she heard of his passing. He is in a better place now, and I am quite sure that when he crossed over into the great bright light that the first person to greet him was Red Barnhart. They coach now where the seasons never close and they never are behind at halftime, let alone the end of the game. My thoughts and prayers, and that of my Mom and brother, Gary, are with you all. Hope to be able to see you sometime soon. We will all miss Coach Romanoski a lot, but we will also get together again someday, and it will be a great reunion!

I knew of Bernie long before I met him and then I had the pleasure of being associated with him when I coached at Shamokin Area in the early 1970's. What a kind and gracious individual. I loved doing his radio and tv sports shows. Bernie gave a lot to the Coal Township/Shamokin area and never asked for anything in return. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to know him and call him FRIEND.

With great sorrow we read Bernie's obituary. Our deepest sympathy to Ruth, Bernie Jr. David and extended family members. We go back to 1949 when Bernie first began assisting the coaches at C.T.H.S. Whenever football is discussed today the stories of Bernie, Walt and Coal Township football come to life. What a legacy and magnificent journey.
God Bless You,

I first met Bernie when my father, Joe Glosek, was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Coal Township High School. Bernie also came to see my dad when he was inducted into the Bloomsburg Hall of Fame. He wanted to make sure that I got a good photo of him with my father. Bernie brought so much laughter to those around him. What a remarkable man.

Our sincere condolences to the Romanoski family. I shall always remember playing JV football under Bernie at Coal Township in 55. I had moved out of the area in 59 and returned in 04. I wore my purple and white demon jacket to a Bucknell basketball game one evening and Bernie quickly noticed it and caught up with me after the game. He introduced himself and I was so elated to see him after all those years. He remarked, I wonder who was wearing those colors with a demon on the back. We had a very nice chat. I shall miss seeing Bernie.

What an amazing man who lived such a wonderful life! Bernie was always making us laugh and his outlook on life made him everyone's friend. Bernie was my Mom's uncle and I have such vivid memories of spending time with him and Ruth ever since I was little - going over to visit the Center St house and even recently when they both came down to Georgia to visit us during Masters Week! Bernie rode around Lake Lanier on a jet ski and was cracking jokes the whole time. I consider it a gift and a blessing to say I knew him and he was family. Our prayers go out to Ruth and the entire family, but you all know he is in a great place!

Uncle Bernie will be missed by my whole family. We loved when Mom/Rita, Dad/Gus, Aunt Ruth and Uncle Bernie visited us at our home in Georgia. We made many memories at the Master's Golf Tournament where Dad and Uncle Bernie enjoyed seeing their favorite celebrities golf. We had many laughs out on the lake with Joy and Gary when Uncle Bernie and Dad/Gus road the jet ski. Uncle Bernie gave us the gift of laughter. He got my jokes and I got his, he had a wonderful sense of humor. When Uncle Bernie entered a room the party got started. He was even joking with us when we visited him the Saturday before he passed away. He meant so much to so many people. We will keep him in our hearts and minds. We'll carry our memories forever. It won't be the same without him and we will miss him.

It is with deep sadness that we learned of Bernie's death. We will always remember the smile on his face and the twinkle in his eyes whenever we saw him with Diane's family at Knoebles Grove amusement park or at family functions. The true gift of any parents' life is the legacy of the children and grandchildren they raise, nurture and set an example for in hopes they grow up to be responsible, caring and loving individuals. Bernie set a high standard and has beautiful children and grandchildren to carry on his legacy. May the love of God grant you peace, the love of friends bring you comfort, and the love of Bernie live forever in your hearts. It was a pleasure to know him. Ruth and Diane, our prayers are with you and your family. God Bless

To all the Romanoski Family:
The greater Shamokin area is a better place for Bernie being here with us. He always gave me great feedback as a broadcaster. One of the funniest stories is when he tried to combine football and golf with "Jazz". I heard the story before, but laughed outloud when I read it in the paper. God Bless.

Bernie was a part of my life from the time I can remember. He was always a positive force of encouragement. He always made me feel special and loved to hear me sing. More importantly than any of that, he was a true friend to my grandfather and for that I will always be grateful. God Speed Bernie and thanks for everything.
