Age: 24 • Staunton
Joshua Scott Shackelford, 24, of 1243 Middle River Road passed away Thursday, November 24, 2016 at his residence.
Mr. Shackelford was born on December 8, 1991 in Harrisonburg, Virginia, a son of Jeffery Scott Shackelford and Debra Kay (Snyder) Leo.
Joshua was a member of Wayside Baptist Church and a 2010 Graduate of Fort Defiance High School where he excelled in baseball and football. He enjoyed fishing, hiking, riding horses, spending time outdoors and reading his Bible. Joshua was a friend to many, and was always willing to lend a helping hand to others in need.
Mr. Shackelford was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Juanita (McCauley) Fletcher.
In addition to his mother and father, Joshua is survived by his step-father, Stephen Leo of Staunton; his father's friend, Robin Nevins, of Verona; a sister, Elizabeth Brooke Weeks and her husband Jordan of Vesuvius; a niece, Clara Weeks; a nephew, Landon Weeks; maternal grandparents, Hugh David, II and Betty Lou (Aker) Snyder of Staunton; a special great-uncle, Gregory "Peck" Shackelford and his wife Joan; and his pet dog "Diesel."
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 30, 2016 in the Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.
A Celebration of life will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 1, 2016 in Wayside Baptist Church, 45 Turk Mountain Lane, Waynesboro by Pastor Jerry Cline.
Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers will be Ray Meyers, Joshua Massie, Ethan Jewell, Dakota James, Jakob Wimer, Holston Norman and Addison Daniel.
It is suggested those desiring make memorial contributions to A.C.A.P. Inc. 425 Lee Jackson Highway, Staunton, Virginia 24401.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.

I will always remember when Josh talked me in to swimming across lake, at Stony Creek, half way across he said "don't worry, I got you" we laughed, and swam across. Josh always had big smile when I would see him, and we had many conversations that I will not forget. I feel very fortunate to have known him, and grateful for the memories I have.

A Walk in the Mountains
As I took my first step, I knew I was in Heaven. All I could hear was that old crow and the creek running by my side A Pileated Woodpecker pounding on a tree far away An old Hen in the background singing yelp... yelp yelp The leaves were orange, red, yellow, green and brown. It seemed like a rainbow on the ground. The squirrels were barking as if they did not want me here, but yet I think they were just happy to see me again, and was just saying hello.
The wind blew and I knew my Father was breathing on me, and I knew I was safe. I could smell the sassafras roots in the ground. I could see their fingers on their trees I past my favorite rock today and just said Hello Friend I will be back soon to warm you up, and then, me and you can talk again.
Shortly down the path, after consuming all of God's Glorious Creation, I spotted a man. Grey hair, and seemed to be lost. He was sitting by the creek side as if he was counting the fish that swam by. He didn't have a pair of shoes on, and was just sitting there with a Cane as if he couldn't walk very well.
I said hello fellow you doing alright. He said yea, I'm just sitting here in my living room. I said can I come joining you he said, sure friend, nobody has ever asked me that before. We just sat on that old rock and talked about how beautiful this day is. He said to me, what brings you here I said, Well Sir I just miss this place. When I come here I feel like I'm at home. I can be myself here with simple and easy understanding. It brings peace to my Heart and the sound of nothing. I love it here you know! He said I know, you were going to your favorite tree today, but instead, you found me. I said, yes Sir, you're right. But I don't think I need to do that tree today. I just like sitting here talking with you. I feel as if I have known you for a long time. He said Jeff, I have known you forever!
After a while of talking with my new found friend, I realized he was my Father. We shook hands and he gave me a hug as I was about to leave. He said, don't you worry now son, I'll be here when you come back. I said thank you Father, I'll be back soon. Maybe next time we will take a walk. I would love for you to tell me about this mountain and how you organized your living room so well. I would like to bring my family with me next time. I would really like for you to meet them. He said sure That sounds great I already know them one by one, and would love to see them and talk to them again.
As I got up to leave, He said son do you know where you are and I said, yes Sir I'm in Heaven. He said OK, now I have a gift for you I said, Sir, I don't deserve a gift He said it's not yours to keep, but only to give I said Thank You Father It Shall be Given

I loved and respected this fine man, more than life itself, who ever wrote the other comment was rite on, he would give his shirt off his back to help others, never disrespected anyone, no matter what, he was a man among men, for so young. GOD keep and protect this young lad, I'm sure there's a special plan for him in heaven.

What do I Like about Joshua Scott Shackelford? His Smile... His Heart... His ability to give a man His pair of shoes because he is walking barefoot through the woods. To say "Yes Sir, and No Mam" and to have Respect for his Elders and Friends. To be able to walk outside and say Dad... I finally know what Love Is..... "it's like when you walk outside and you can feel the wind blowing... You can't touch and you can't see it But You Know That It is There!
