Dan Whitlow Obituary

A loved man, Dan Whitlow passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning from an obstructed generator muffler in the generator shed at Summit Lake.
Dan was born March 7, 1957, in Minnesota to Eldred and Betty Whitlow. He graduated high school in 1975; right after that, he packed up his 1964 Plymouth Valiant and drove to Alaska. He loved Alaska and quickly found his niche. Dan found work at Kens Auto, where he worked for 10 years. Ken Brewer and Dan, had a strong friendship that lasted the rest of his life. In 1980, he married his soulmate, Chris. They had all the same interests; what a match. Together they helped raise their nephew, Branden, and niece, Morgan Roybal.
Dan was a car guy through and through. He found great friends like Terry Kennard, Rick Campbell, Kenny Armstrong and so many others who shared his love for cars. He taught Kelsey Meltvedt how to drag race. When she won her division in Anchorage last year, he was so proud. In 2002, Dan and Chris built a cabin in Summit Lake where they made more friends. He snowmachined like he was doing ballet on snow. He felt that was God's country. In 2006, Dan, Terry, Rick, Kenny and Greg Bratten, built a large place in Cantwell where each family has their own bedroom. His friends became his family.
Dan was a guy who lived up to his potential and expected everyone around him to do the same. He was the "Energizer Bunny."
He is survived by his wife, Chris Whitlow; nephew Brandon Roybal; niece Morgan Roybal, of Fairbanks; brothers Nathan and Joe Whitlow; and sister Leah Lucken, of Minnesota.
Services will be at 7 p.m. March 20 in the Binkley Room at Pike's Waterfront Lodge. Arrangements are entrusted to Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.

Chris, it's been many years but I used to be a Gallagher, from Fairbanks, and your friend many moons ago. I usually keep up w/ Fbks. news and when I ran across this I said "no, it can't be." And yet it was an all-too-true and awful reality. I remember Danny for being such a happy, smiling man. Last I saw Danny, he definitely had more hair! My thoughts and prayers go out to you! This is the time to turn to our Grand Creator and latch on to the sure hope set out for Dan. Kristi

Chris,
We are so sorry about your loss. We will always remember Dan for the great man he was. That quiet reassurance will be greatly missed. Whether stuck in the back country or just working on a project there was no one better to have there to help get out or just fix what is broken.

So sorry for your loss Chris. Danny was one in a million. He was the best of the best. Being around him kept me in check sometimes. There was many times we where out and about riding snowmachines and with Danny there I just felt like I should keep things in check. He was a great guy. I will always remember when he came hunting with Chris and I and he was able to get a moose. Great memories.

Dan was a great guy to work with at a Division of Forestry. Loved his attitude he made challenging times at the office easier....even though we no longer live in Alaska he will still be missed.

March 16, 2015

One of my favorite Dan stories is when I got my skidoo stuck in 5 feet of snow in the brush when I wandered off the trail off the way home up at Summit. I tried every trick I knew but to no avail. Dan had built this snow trailer to haul heavy loads. He took a light weight 4-wheel trailer and removed the wheels and replaced them with 4 snow boards. When he heard about my predicament he offered to help. After setting up near my machine he ran several circles around my sled and then out to the trail. After we got the beast loaded on to the trailer he gunned his +130hp sled and dragged my skidoo and pride right to my front door. I know one thing if you look up friend in God's dictionary there will be a picture of Dan Whitlow in color, full page.
Love you Dan

Dear Chris,
I was so shocked to hear of Dan's passing, and have been thinking of you every day. I remember the good times we had in Hawaii, you and Dan were the only couple we had ever taken a golf vacation with. What a truly fabulous person Dan was, always there helping and smiling. Prayers for you, and Morgan and Brandon, and I know he is smiling down on you.

Dear Chris
Birdie and I were devastated when we heard of Dan's passing. So many good times at Summit sitting and sharing stories and making new ones with each visit, what fun. He would be the first to come in anyone's time of need and the last to leave and always with a smile and no matter what the situation Dan had a fix. I am so sorry I couldn't be there in his time of need. Pleas come see us this summer.
Love Dennis and Birdie
