Douglas Barnett Obituary

Douglas S. Barnett, 54, of Olathe, Kan., went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at home after a three-year battle against leukemia.

A celebration service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at Indian Creek Community Church in Olathe, Kan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Temple Hills Baptist Camp, P.O. Box 11731, Bozeman, MT 59719, which Doug and his wife, Chanda, managed for three summers. This camp is dedicated to furthering the Kingdom of God, which was Doug's passion life. View Doug's story at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqIuCL822uv.

Doug was born Sept. 20, 1956, to Joe and Janelle Barnett in Bozeman. He graduated from Bozeman Senior High School in 1975. Doug continued his education at Sioux Falls College in South Dakota, graduating in 1979, and he completed a master's degree from the University of Kansas.

Doug leaves behind an incredible legacy. He was a loving husband, dedicated father, compassionate son, caring brother, revered teacher, encouraging coach and a passionate follower of Jesus Christ. Doug taught in the Olathe School District for 32 years, coached basketball for more than 20 years, and served as president of the Kansas Association of American Educators for 13 years. He impacted thousands of lives, is loved by many and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Chanda Barnett of Olathe, Kan., and her parents, Chad and Connie Lutey of Billings; his daughter, Jana (Josh) May and their two children, Cayden and Ashten of Billings; daughter, Lyndsey (Terry) Blunt and their daughter, Addison of Olathe, Kan.; son, Kole Ryan, a senior at Montana State University; his parents, Joe and Janelle Barnett, and his brother, Ron (Lori) Barnett, all of Belgrade; his sister, Cheri (Dave) Thye of Fort Worth, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

I have very fond memories of Mr. Barnett during my time at Pioneer Trail. One of my favorite was our trip to Washington D.C. in 8th grade. What a generous person to give up time with his own family to give us that experience. He is a great role model for all of us educators as to what it means to give your best to your students. Rest in peace and my sympathies to your family during this time.

I am so saddened to hear of Doug's death, I know that all of his family and friends will miss this wonderful man immensely. I knew Doug as a boy, the younger brother of my friend Cheri. I spent some happy hours with the Barnetts, I have never forgotten the warmth and kindness of their home. Their faith-filled family and loving home have remained an inspiration to me over the years. It is easy to see from the comments of others and from Doug's video testimony that the foundation his family gave him lived on in the life he created with Chanda and his children. Much love and sympathy to Chanda and family and to Mr. and Mrs. Barnett, Cheri and Ron. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

My deepest sympathies to the Barnett family. Mr. Barnett was one of my favorite teachers that made learning fun and I could tell that it wasn't just a "job" for him, that he truly cared about his students. He will be missed dearly by so many people, but it's comforting knowing that he is no longer suffering. Rest in peace, Mr. Barnett.

Chanda and family,
Doug will be truly missed in the Brougham Neighborhood and the Community of Olathe. Just remember that he lives always in your lives and the lives that he has touched and is still teaching us all about God and Jesus Christ as he is with them now and using his teaching to continue their teaching even though he is not here on earth with us. We love you and your family.

Mr. Barnett touched so many lives. He was kind, patient, caring, loving and a wonderful teacher. A few months ago, I saw him when I was out doing some shopping and was able to talk to him. Even though I had not been a student of his for several years, he remembered me and gave me a big hug. I am so sad that he is gone, but I know his spirit will live on forever in everyone he touched through the years.
