Elizabeth Rose Obituary

Elizabeth "Cookie" Rose, 61, passed away peacefully Aug. 21, 2010, at home surrounded by family, after a valiant battle with cancer.
A Celebration of Life will take place in Anchorage today, Thursday, Aug. 26, at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St., at 3 p.m.
Cookie was born Jan. 31, 1949, to Fred and Marie (Brown) Woods in Fairbanks where she grew up. In 1967, she married Charles "Stuffer" Guinn in Fairbanks and together they raised three children in Juneau, Bethel and Anchorage.
Family was important to Cookie and she devoted her life work to the healing and empowerment of Native people, families and communities. As a community coordinator, teacher and mentor, many will remember her from workshops she conducted across the U.S. and Canada.
Her other positions include: adjunct teacher and research assistant at University of Alaska Anchorage, certified Family Systems trainer, working for the Rural Human Services and a member of Alaska Attachment & Bonding Associates.
Survivors include her son, Charles "Bill" Guinn; daughters, Kristen (Rick Dixon) Guinn and Tonya Fedor; grandchildren, Logan Guinn, whom she was raising, Bryce Dixon, Brenna Roca and Jade Fedor, all of Anchorage; brothers, Claude Keogh of Galena, Charles Woods of Houston, Lawrence "Gus" Nichols of Anchorage and Edward Hunter of Fairbanks; sisters, Altona Rathbun of Anchorage, Elaine Forbes of New Mexico, Priscilla Montanelli and Shirley Barnes of Wasilla; aunt, Judy Woods of Manley; and the Guinn Family of Bethel. She had many other relatives and friends throughout the state.
Cookie was preceded in death by her parents and grandmother, Altona Brown; brother, Gerald Woods; and sister Irene Nichols.
A memorial fund is established at Denali Federal Credit Union under Kristen Guinn to help pay for expenses. A potlatch and gathering will follow the celebration at 438 Aurora Drive, Anchorage.
Cookie will be missed by all who knew her for her kind, loving nature, strong spirit and hearty laugh. She was a wonderful person to talk to; she was patient, kind and tolerant to all. Her love of singing and her beautiful voice will be remembered forever.
Arrangements were entrusted to Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

Cookie and I worked on many projects in rural Alaska through the years. We had a lot of laughs and some powerful and special moments when the sharing among people was so good and so strong that we all grew together. Cookie so often helped pull things together at the end of a training or workhop by singing The Rose as only she could. Rural villages had a wonderful and effective friend in Cookie. She made things happen that brought out the best in people. She always stressed the importance of seeing people as able and strong no matter what the problems were that they faced in life. She had a strong, strong spirit. I know her spirit is still alive. She will always be alive in my heart and mind.

Cookie you were such an inspiration to me when I was first working in the recovery field. I learned so much from you. I haven't seen you in some time but we kept in touch via facebook. I know you fought a difficult and painful battle. I will never forget your singing at your sister's funeral. I was so amazed because I didn't know you sang. You were a songbird! Alaska will miss you. Condolences to your family. I remember visiting with Kristin years ago and seeing you with your grandson. Walk your next journey knowing you were loved by those of us in this world! Valerie Naquin

Just a couple days ago I was laughing and talking with my husband about the first blueberry pie I ever baked.

Cookie and I were close neighbors when we were young girls. I don't remember how old I was but somewhere between 10 and 13; she and I picked blueberries and went to her house to make pies. She did everything because she knew how to cook with so many brothers and sisters and being the oldest sister. She made the crust. She probably let me help measure stuff. We were so proud. It was a beautiful golden brown. We couldn't wait for it to cool to taste it. It was the saltiest blueberry pie ever. We used salt instead of sugar. Love you Cookie and always remember our friendship.

Dearest "Cookie Rose", thank you for advocating, teaching, sharing and giving of yourself to us. You were the light through your teachings. Your gentle and humble ways were that of a wise elder who guided us through our own pain to healing our spirit, your Native People. May we continue to pass on the light and quest toward wellness of our Alaska Native People. Thinking back, I remember Alice Abraham by your side during a conference years ago. What strength and determination you both had together. I can sense the joy it must be to see her again. Plans on this journey are all ready for a new adventure with all your loved ones whom have gone before you. How exciting! Sending my condolences to your family, relatives and friends. May they receive strength and comfort through the wonderful memories of you. God bless and comfort all.

Our deepest condolences to her family. My favorite memory of Cookie was when we spent two weeks together at Alkali Lake going to a seminar in 1989. We picked a huge pile of sage and dried it and soaked some in water each morning and took showers with the water. She sang every chance she could in our drives to and from the workshop. Cookie had so much heart and she was a powerful healer. We will miss her anchoring spirit. Love, Amy and Doug Modig

Cookie you will be missed & forever loved. It was a blessing to reconnect with you & I will hold you in my heart. I read & posted the verse about the same time of her passing which brought strength & comfort

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day - and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” – 2 Timothy 4:7-8

I did not know this very special woman, but I do know one special woman that Cookie mentored. I can see through my friend the value and courage, honor, and respect that Cookie shared with her. Cookie is a great loss to our earthly walk, but a greater value has none placed, than to leave her legacy with those still here. Condolences to the family...
