Gideon Behr Obituary

Gideon Isaac Behr, our beloved son, passed into eternal life into the presence of God and his Savior on July 11, 2022. Born April 17, 2008, in Fairbanks, Gideon's early life was spent in Manley Hot Springs before his family made their home on the Nowitna River.

The oldest of seven children, Gideon was the joy and crown of his family, set apart from his siblings by his red hair and easy smile. Raised in the Bush of Alaska, he enjoyed God's creation with simplicity and purity of heart. He had a strong passion for hunting, trapping and fishing from an early age and embraced the Bush lifestyle wholeheartedly. He led a quiet life and liked to explore the woods and work with his hands, crafting primitive tools, making homemade bows and arrows fletched with feathers from birds he harvested. He enjoyed working with natural materials, making containers out of birch bark, weaving willow baskets and most recently a dugout canoe. He also had two dogs he cared for and used to check his trapline by dogsled.

Gideon was wise and mature beyond his years. He touched everyone he met with his lighthearted spirit and joy for life. He leaves a hole in the hearts of those he knew and will be missed every day.

Gideon is survived by his parents, Shawn and Nicole Behr, of the Nowitna River, and his siblings, Elias, Asa, Alice, Oren, Eva and Ember; Grandmother Lisa Behr, Aunt Macey (Mike) Messina and cousins Lucia, Mila and Ada; Grandparents Andre and Sheri Layral; Uncle Matthew Layral; and cousins Corbin, Caden and Bailey; as well as various other extended family.

Gideon was preceded in death by his grandfather, Milt Behr, and great-grandfather, Walter Wigger, both of Fairbanks.

Two services are planned to celebrate Gideon's life: in Fairbanks, Saturday, July 30, 4 p.m. at Shelter Bible Church, 2755 Horner Court, and in Manley Hot Springs, Saturday, Aug. 6, with a graveside service and potluck.

I'm so sorry to hear about this -- and yet feel so blessed to read about Gideon. I did not know him, but was honored to learn about him, and his love and embrace of life. Gideon is still impacting others -- and so is his family. Love and prayers from North Pole.

My heart breaks for the families related to Gideon. Although I never knew Gideon, I have known his grandmother since I was a kid. She spoke affectionately about all her grandchildren, and Gideon was no exception. I have been praying for the family/extended family during this very difficult time. I am grateful that Gideon and his immediate family knew Jesus. My husband and I continue to pray and extend our condolences. Barb (Boggess) & Perry Schneider.
