Judith Kleinfeld Obituary

Judith Karen Kleinfeld passed away on May 16, 2025, in Fairbanks, Alaska. Born on May 29, 1944, in Dayton, Ohio, Judy studied her way to Wellesley College and then to Harvard graduate school where she earned her Masters and Doctorate in education. She met her beloved husband, Andrew Kleinfeld, in 1966. Positive that he had found a gem, he proposed three weeks later. They journeyed to Alaska in the summer of 1967 and came to stay in the summer of 1969.

Judy began work at the University of Alaska's Institute of Social and Economic Research, whose director, Victor Fischer, told her "Do something for Alaska, and keep yourself funded!"

Did she ever. When the Alaska State Legislature honored her for her 41 years of service to the University of Alaska, they wrote, "Few scholars in Alaska have covered more ground more thoroughly than she has in the past four decades, or made a greater impact on the direction of public policy." Her extraordinarily wide and deep research covered challenges in rural education, where her groundbreaking work on boarding schools changed Alaskan policy and allowed rural communities to have their own high schools. Her work on children with fetal alcohol syndrome helped numerous families raise happier and more fulfilled kids, and provided practical wisdom on how they could thrive as adults. Her books exploring the influence of the frontier on the Alaska and American psyche showed the importance of frontiers for growth and exploration. In 1991, she created the Northern Studies Program, a first-of-its-kind interdisciplinary program to study issues shared across the circumpolar north. For 25 years, she wrote a bi-weekly column in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner and Anchorage Daily News on social science, parenting, and daily life that lived on the refrigerator doors of numerous Alaska families.

Dr. Judy Kleinfeld received numerous honors for her work, from the Edith R. Bullock Award for Excellence from the University of Alaska, to the Robert Piacenza Award for Teaching Excellence, the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award for the university professor making the greatest contribution to the community, and the Emil Usibelli Award for Distinguished Research. She contributed all funds from such awards back to the university to create scholarships for students - which are still ongoing.

However, she always considered her greatest achievement the family that she created with her husband, Andy, to whom she was married for 58 years. When their three children, Daniel, Rachel and Joshua, entered their lives, Judy poured into them her immense love, intense educational focus, and care for their many extracurricular activities and interests. She also raised an endless succession of kids' pets and much-loved family dogs. Although her work enriched the lives of thousands of students and her research improved the lives of so many others, her three children and husband were the most important part of Judy's life.

Judy Kleinfeld is survived by her loving husband, her three grown children, and six grandchildren ranging in age from 13 to 6. Her life was blessed with meaning and enriched by the love of those closest to her. In keeping with her general refusal to make a fuss about herself, she did not want a public service, and her family has already held a small memorial in her memory. In lieu of flowers, donations could be sent to Fairbanks Jewish Center at www.jewishfairbanks.org/donate or 1417 28th Ave, Fairbanks, AK 99701.

Thank you all for your thoughtful remarks. I especially appreciate hearing from people we had not seen for a long time. It's hard to go on without Judy. We were pretty much together all the time since September 1962. I was so fortunate to have her. I am having a hard time without another 59 years with her. What a loss. You are so kind.

Judy will be missed, here in Fairbanks, at Congregation Or HaTzafon, and in the hearts of the many people she touched. For years, I trusted that if I turned around, or waited a few days, Judy would be there with wisdom and caring to share a few words. I am so glad that her books reside on my shelves where I can visit with her. May her memory be for a blessing.

Judy was first my professor and later my colleague, mentor, and dear friend. I admired her intellect, deeply appreciated her investment in me as a younger scholar, and treasured our friendship. Her passing is a tremendous loss to the community and more so to her wonderful family. My heart aches for Andy, Daniel, Rachel, and Joshua and their families.

When I, then a 30 years old fresh PhD holding immigrant, arrived, alone, not knowing a soul, to Fairbanks, Judith was the only person at the university who greeted me, and then invited me to her home for Thanksgiving. I was so grateful, I still remember this dinner to this day, and to this day it was the funnest Thanksgiving of my life, because it was funny, witty, intellectually stimulating, and exciting. Judith was easily the most intelligent and brilliant woman in Alaska. She was my inspiration, because she was stylish, she was chic and tough, and inspired immediate respect, even owe. She had what French call "de la classe". She was, in other words, a real star. I am so lucky I saw her shining.I hope she did not suffer too much. Thank you, Judith.

Mrs. Kleinfeld was one of my first professors at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She was also a friend. I knew her from her son playing jazz. Mrs. Kleinfeld and her husband were big supporters of their son Josh who played jazz with us. I remember her being kind, gently, and sweet. Even in the class room, she was gentle, and sweet, offering gentle corrections. On my work. She will be truly missed.

Dr Judy Kleinfeld was a very compassionate soul who impressed upon me to reach for the stars. Although lacking self confidence, she treated me as everyone should be treated and helped me to gain my BA in English and receive my certification in Secondary Education in 1991. RIP Judy, you will be greatly missed.

I´m so sorry to hear of her passing. Even with her enormous educational career, she was a genuinely good person. She and Andy took our entire family of 8 into their home when we were flooded out of ours in the 1967 flood. I´ll never forget that kindness.
She will live on through the memories so many of us have.

Judy was such a powerful force in the Fairbanks community and within the small Jewish community of Or Hatzafon. She was a strong female leader in the congregation and will be missed dearly. May her memory be a blessing.

Prof. Kleinfeld was helpful and supportive of my studies in the Northern Studies program. Only later did I become aware of the breadth of her scholarship and research.

Judy was much loved and will be missed. Our friendship was deep and meaningful. Her moral center and courage helped many Alaskans. On his drive to Alaska through Canada my husband stopped for a burger in a small rural town. The man at the counter was a local teacher. When he told him he knew Judy Kleinfeld the man said "she´s the only person who wrote anything at all worth anything about teaching in the bush". My husband has remembered this for over thirty years. Judy was a gem and a bright light.
