Kermit Mellon Obituary

A wonderful father and avid hunter and fisherman, Kermit Wayne Mellon, of Clear, was involved in a fishing/boating accident Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2015 on the Copper River near Chitina. He was 63.
Born Feb. 18, 1952, in Breckenridge, Minnesota, he was the youngest child and only son of Willis and Bernice Mellon. He came to the Silver Valley with his family in 1953 and was raised there, attending Silver King through Kellogg High School.
He married Susan K. Hill in 1970, and they made their home in South Lake Tahoe, California, where he started as a parking attendant at Harvey's Resort Hotel, and later founded "Eyeball Drywall" in the tourist city. The couple later divorced.
He moved to Alaska in 1982 and joined the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades Local 1955, working in Kaktovik, Galena, Valdez, Fairbanks and North Pole. He retired working at Clear Air Station and spent time between Alaska and Arizona.
He hunted elk, moose and other wild game, and fished salmon and Copper river "reds" for 20 years, maintaining a salmon catch and a fish wheel to assist him.
He also assisted many people with their fish wheels when needed. He loved to make sure all those he knew were supplied with Copper River reds for the year. He also caught, cleaned and shipped salmon to two close friends in Idaho, who then distributed fresh Alaska salmon to many others in the Silver Valley.
He was well liked by everyone who knew him and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his son, Greg Mellon; grandsons Dylan and Wayne Mellon; granddaughters Corbin and Kyler Mellon, of Anchorage; daughter Tara Wade; grandson Clayton Wade; granddaughter Athena Wade, of Palmer; and daughter Jennifer Mellon; grandsons Dorian and Gavin Mellon, of Anchorage; three sisters, Marilyn (Gary) Larson, of Smelterville, Idaho, and Arizona; Carol (Jim) Wieber, of Spokane, Washington, and Deborah Mellon, of Kellogg, Idaho; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and son in-law Stephen Wade.
Celebration of life with potlatch/potluck will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Anderson-Clear Lions Club located at 194 A St., Clear, AK 99704.
Cards, letters or memorial may be sent to Jennifer Mellon at 528 W. 75th Ave., Anchorage, AK 99518. Any money sent will be used to make the Copper River safer for all visitors.

I will always remember the golf outings Kermit and I had down at the Black Diamond golf course in Healy. One time when he threw a club and it wrapped around a tree and I asked him if he wanted to save it for a souvenir. Another time was in Queen Creek when he donated a club to a person who stopped in the middle of the road to pick it up.
Kermit was a true friend and I will miss our annual golf outings. My condolences goes out to the Mellon family and may God bless you all.

I remember Kermit from the days when we were both employed at Clear. He was a good friend and we exchanged many conversations about our mutual hobbies and things of interest. He will be missed by all as he had a generous heart. My condolences to his family

Kermit you were such a good friend and " a rock" to your friends. You were sensitive and kind always there to help. I will so miss you. When ever I see bright red salmon I will remember your friendship. Thank you for all the salmon you shared with my family. When we meet up in the next world I am going to slap you for leaving so abruptly. Until then I will just miss my silly frog. Thank you for being my friend. My heart goes out to your family, their loss is great.

Kermit, you rascal, still to this day, I do not know how you removed (stole) my trophy from my room at Clear. All I know is, that when I arrived home (Philadelphia)I could not wait to show-off the trophy, to my kids. No trophy. Two weeks later I get this mysterious package in the mail with no return address. In the package was the trophy with a Ha Ha note from you. Kermit, we all had fun winning those trophies by beating the Clear Military Police softball team for the Clear AFS Championship 1994. Kermit, I enjoyed working with you and playing with you.
God Bless, Neal Sullivan
