Larry Wegner Obituary

Former longtime Fairbanks resident Larry E. Wegner died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015 in Carson City, Nevada, after open heart surgery. Larry was born Feb. 11, 1936, and raised in Boston, New York, the son of Edwin and Mildred (Colgate) Wegner. He moved to Conroe, Texas, in 1965, after meeting his wife, Joyce (Andrews) Wegner.
While in Texas, he worked as a union painter and then as a line driver for McCurdy Trucking. He came to Fairbanks in 1974, driving up the Alaska Highway seeking better employment opportunities during the trans-Alaska pipeline boom. He worked as a member of the Teamsters Union Local No. 959, hauling freight and the 48-inch pipe that was used for the pipeline up the Haul Road (now known as the Dalton Highway). His CB handle was "The Shadow." He drove north until the mid 1990s and then he started running south to Seattle as owner operator under L & J Trucking.
He logged hundreds of trips up and down the Alaska Highway the majority of them with his little yorkie dog, Sassy as his co-pilot. Once he retired, he spent summers in Valdez on his boat, the Aaren L, taking friends and family fishing. August was his favorite month - when the silver salmon would migrate into Prince William Sound. Larry was a U.S. Army veteran, stationed in Germany during the cold war years.
He is survived by his family; sisters Melody (Peter) Schweilzer and Marleah (Ronald) Szudzik, and brothers Harold "Butch" (Joyce) Jensen and Robin (Kathy) Jensen. Larry left five children, Maggie (Doug) Carnes, Liz (Kraig) Rhow, Mike (Lana) Wegner, Cheryl (Craig) Wegner and Toni (Ward) Isaacs. He is also survived by six grandchildren, David Burrow, Aaren Porteur, Tara Wegner, Jeremy Wegner, Cassie Wegner and Amanda Kraus and nine great-grandchildern. He also left two dear friends, Paul Babbs, of Conroe, Texas, and Gary Gannon, of Steilacoom, Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother, Robert Wegner; his two grandsons, Robert Burrow and Seth White; and his wife, Joyce (Andrews) Wegner, whom he joined on Valentine's Day. In remembrance of Larry, donations may be made to The National Parkinson's Foundation and/or Paralyzed Veterans of America. "Fish on," and you will be missed.

You were more like a Brother than a Dad. You taught me so much, and we had so much fun along the way. You made me what I am today. I learned but also observed. Sometimes the lessons came from me doing the exact opposite of what you taught. I know it drove you crazy but you were Father enough to tell me I was sucessful. One of my favorite conversations you asked me "Mike, how is it that you have never had any speeding tickets?", my answer was "Because I learned from you. I've observed your driving and did the exact opposite". I'm sure going to miss the phone conversations when on the road. Telling you where I am, what I'm doing, where Im headed, talking trucks. God, I love you. I'm proud to tell everyone, I had the absolute Best Dad! See you on the turnaround!

Larry...I wish to express how much you and Joyce mean to each one of us - while here on earth and eternally. This is a temporary separation that we all share now, because, I believe that we will all see each other again at some point. I am so grateful to GOD that he brought you all into our lives. We, each one of us, will remember the sincere care and devotion that you presented to us in individual cases, the help given to us while you were with us here. We also shared many a laugh with one another. That is so nice to reflect on now. The Wegner family will always remain a part of the Gannon family. We love you all - each one of you. ♡ Love, Jocelyn and David, also, Gary, Jackie, Doug and Shauna (Gannon Family)

So long, Larry. And Joyce too. I met Larry when I worked up there and rode the Alcan with him a couple times. My condolences to the family.

So many memories flood my mind. With so many missed years my favorite memory was when our sister, Marleah had a reunion for us. Marleah realized we (Robin, Marleah, Melody, Butch, Larry) had never been together all at one time since we were children. We made a great memory!
JOHN 3:16 says" For God so loved the world He gave His One and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."
I rejoice knowing that my brother is now with his LORD and SAVIOR, JESUS and I will see him again.
