Lily Miller Obituary

Lily Ungwiluk Miller was born in Gambell, Alaska, on Oct. 3, 1949, to Frank and Anna Okhtokiyuk. She was adopted by our paternal uncle and his wife, Wallace and Bertha Ungwiluk. Our brother next to her was born with heart problems, so she got adopted because biological parents couldn't take care of her.

She was raised lovingly by Wallace and Bertha; her brothers loved her as well, Winfred and Rodney. But she was told of her biological parents and siblings. Paternal clan members are like biological siblings in Yupik culture. She completed her elementary education, then went to Mount Edgecombe High School. Later she met the love of her life and married him. They moved to Fairbanks in 1975 and raised their family. Lily worked at Fort Wainwright, VIP Laundry, FNA Headstart, and Women and Children's Center as a teacher's aide.

Lily loved attending church and hearing God's word. She was a champion berry picker and enjoyed her time out picking berries with friends and family. She was always so generous in sharing her berries with elders. Her Eskimo donuts were always a big hit at church gatherings. She enjoyed going to Ice Dog Hockey games. And what brought Lily pure joy is her grandsons.

Lily is preceded in death by many loved ones including her adoptive parents, Wallace and Bertha; her biological parents, Frank and Anna; her brothers, Winfred, Rodney, Wade, Caleb and Hiram; husband, Edward Miller; sister, Ila; her niece, Maxine; her nephews, Richard and Samuel; nieces, Theresa, Davinda and Stephanie. Other nephews include Jason, Richard and Archie.

Lily is survived by her sons, George, Dale and Chris, and daughter Chelsea; grandsons, Donovon, Franklin and Hiram; sister, Beulah and family; nephew, Rodney Ungwiluk and family; and many cousins and relatives as well.

The families of Lily Miller wish to thank each and every one who visits, calls and helps in every way that you did for all of us, far and near. May the Lord God our creator bless and keep you safe. Thank you very much! lyamsiqnaghhalek!

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at University Community Presbyterian Church, 3510 College Road.

Lilly and her family were our neighbors. We never got to know her very well. One summer she shared blueberries with us. She was very devoted to her family between work and home she helped raise her Grandchildren, we often saw her standing outside waiting for the school bus, with her Grandchildren. Then when school got out she waited outside for the school bus to bring them back. She was devoted to her family and she made a good neighbor and friend. We will miss her. We will pray for Lily's family for comfort and peace as they go on living life without her.

My deepest condolences to the family. Lily was a hard working, kind, and loving person who will be truly missed. She was always so supportive of me as a Principal and as a friend, as our boys Shaun and Chris were childhood friends. I always enjoyed running into her and catching up! She was always busy and so proud of her grandchildren. I am sorry I wasn't able to attend the funeral as I had thought it was going to be on the 6th, but my thoughts and prayers are with her and her family. Heaven has gained another angel.

I met Lily and her boys many years ago. I'm so sorry to hear of her passing. I ate some of her native foods like dried fish dipped in seal oil and her Eskimo ice cream which was blue berries and Crisco. The Crisco was a substitute for seal or walrus fat because none was available at the time. Anyway, it was better than it sounds. I also met her brother Hiram. We were going to boat around St Lawrence Island but unfortunately, he passed away before we could go on the adventure. He was a tall and handsome man. My heart goes out to her boys, which are probably grown men by now. I will always miss you Lily, Gary.

We are so sorry to hear about Lily's passing. She was a warm, generous person that helped us so many times and in so many ways when we were younger and starting out in Fairbanks. She always had a smile and whatever food or help she could provide. She was a hard worker and willing to do anything for her children and family. We are better for having known her and the wonderful memories that she leaves us.
