Lydia Randolph Obituary

Nov. 10, 1941- Aug. 7, 2018
Lydia spent her early life in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, with her parents, Theodore G.A. and Helen S. Uber, along with her older sister, Ina, and younger sister, Eva. She attended Slippery Rock and Grove City high schools, where she was active in girls basketball, band and chorus. In 1964, Lydia made Fairbanks her home, where she had a successful career as a civil service examiner. Throughout her life in Fairbanks, Lydia' activities included driving in the powder puff division of the Fairbanks Sports Car Club and participating in Quota Club's various fundraisers, as well as supporting the political and State Farm careers of her husband, Dick (or "Richard," as she preferred to call him).
Lydia and Dick were married for 39 years, and enjoyed a very happy, active life together, which was graciously shared with family and friends across Alaska and beyond. They traveled extensively, visiting all continents and dozens of countries, including China and Cuba. Summers were spent in Alaska flying their various planes, around the state - building or maintaining their cabins at Lake Clark, McGrath, Manley and Chena Hot Springs. Much of many summers, they also enjoyed numerous adventures with their houseboat exploring the Tanana, Yukon and Nushagak river systems. Not only husband and wife, these two were best friends, who appreciated each other, along with fishing, hunting and exploring Alaska and the world.
Lydia was creative and never idle. She was an accomplished seamstress, who often made clothing for herself and family members. Lydia's grandchildren fondly remember the personalized costumes and pajamas that she constructed for them and have fond memories of baking and doing a variety of crafts with "Nannie." An enjoyment of crocheting was shared with many babies, and a few fortunate adults, who received customized afghans made by Lydia. She was appreciated and will be remembered as a gracious hostess and all-around handy woman both in Fairbanks and the couple's summer home at Lake Clark. In addition to gardening, walking, biking, boating and fishing, Lydia always made sure that there was plenty of food and goodies for all and no end of activities for the guests and grandchildren.
Lydia was preceded in death by her parents, Ted and Helen Uber; and her sister, Ina Abraham. She is survived by her husband, Dick; children, Wendee (Dave) Easton and Dean (Susan) Barnes; stepchildren, Tamera Randolph, Ed (Tammy) Randolph and Fred Randolph; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Eva Hansen; brothers and sisters in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
Lydia was a talented, hardworking individual who chose to devote herself to being a loving, thoughtful, fun and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She is, and will be, greatly missed.
Lydia requested there be no service. Her ashes will be spread at Lake Clark, Alaska. In lieu of flowers, remembrance donations may be made to the Quota International of Fairbanks (PO Box 74850 Fairbanks, AK 99707) or Anchorage Waldorf School, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, where a daughter-in-law teaches and three granddaughters have been students (3250 Baxter Road, Anchorage, AK 99504).

Dick & Lydia were the best neighbors, and so much fun! We are sad to hear of Lydia passing. How fortunate we were to have had her friendship!

November 12, 2018

I first met Lydia during the 1967 Flood. She was a soft spoken person then and the same person many years
later. I know Dick depended on her for what she did for the family, his politics and his business. God bless her and her family.

We first met Lydia and Dick in Flagstaff learning to paraglide. Lydia wasn't there to watch, she was there to do! In the end; Lydia left the flying to Dick but kept a patient eye on us. We were fortunate to have many excellent adventures together, breaking some trail and breaking some rules. Lydia was the calm eye in the storm and the warm hug or word of encouragement when you needed it. We treasure her friendship and will miss her greatly. Our condolences to Dick and their large, loving, family.
