Margaret Gray Obituary

Margaret Alberta Clarke Gray, former Alaska Bush nurse, educator and homemaker, passed away April 21 at her home in Fairbanks due to cancer at age 86.
Margaret was the second child born to Joseph and Marylizbeth Clarke in the Lloydminster Saskatchewan hospital. Her family lived on a farm 20 miles southwest of Lloydminster near the small town of Paradise Valley, Alberta. Margaret's mother, born in the United States, had been a school teacher before her marriage. Her father immigrated to Canada from England with his parents when he was 12 years old.
Their home had oil lamps and an outhouse, no running water or telephone, typical for a farm home of the 1930s. The family grew to include five children; four girls and one boy. Margaret's school was a one room building with a nearby barn for horses and one teacher for all eight grades. The two older Clarke children rode a horse to school and later a cart was added when brother Jack started school.
In 1941, after a few frozen digits on the children, the promise of an easier life on the coast, and not wanting to go into debt for mechanical farm equipment, it was decided to sell out and move to Vancouver Island. A year later they moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, and three years later to Gibsons Landing, British Columbia.
Then in 1947 the American faction of the family sponsored the Clarkes into the United States to Idaho where Margaret finished her last year of high school. Between 1948 and 1951, Margaret put herself though school at the University of Idaho at Moscow by working at the local telephone office. Because the family car was unreliable, she only returned home twice a year during this time even though it was 80 miles away.
After graduation with a pre-nursing degree, Margaret taught school for one year in the small town of Pierce, Idaho, and summer babysitting in order to save money to continue an advanced nursing degree. So, off to the University of Washington School of Nursing for the years of 1952-55, working a switchboard at the hospital part-time to support herself until graduation with a Bachelor's of Science in public health nursing.
By 1950, tuberculosis in Alaska's rural villages was so bad that hospitals were overwhelmed. In 1955, Margaret and nine other nurses were hired by the U.S. Public Health Service to administer two new medicines that had proven very effective for tuberculosis. She was based in Fairbanks but assigned to the villages of the upper Yukon River. With the medicines, TB was quickly but temporarily eradicated within a year. Then, she was hired by the Territory of Alaska for general nursing work in the same geographic area. This is where she first met her future husband, Charles (Chuck) Gray, when he was weathered-in at Fort Yukon on a hunting trip.
During the five years she worked as a public health nurse she developed a deep respect and admiration for the Native people where she worked - the upper Yukon and Nome areas.
After her nursing career and marriage, it may have been a bit of a surprise to her husband to learn that Margaret had quit her job in order to become a full-time homemaker, mother of three, and devoting her life to volunteerism.
Margaret's strong Christian faith was the root of her humble nature, always putting others first. After her marriage in 1962 she served as Sunday school superintendant for more than 30 years and participated in other activities at First Presbyterian Church, as well as several other charitable groups.
Margaret is survived by her husband of 54 years, Charles Gray; her children John (Jeanne), Allen (Tracie) and Steve; sisters Beth and Alice; brother Jack (Jane) and brother-in-law Gilbert; six grandchildren, Baylie, Emily, Jessica, Abby, Aaron, Naomi, all Grays; and two great-grand children, Freyja and Ogden Carlson. Her three sons followed her example, putting themselves through college and earning degrees.
According to her request, there will be a private family service in her home. The family wishes to thank the local Hospice group for their professional assistance following her diagnosis.
In lieu of flowers, Margaret suggested donations may be made to the Literacy Council of Alaska, LOVE In the Name of Christ, Fairbanks Correctional Ministries, or the Breast Cancer Detection Center of Alaska, all of which she has donated her time.

Miss you Margaret! Miss our chats, spot of tea in your kitchen and your unassuming humble ways. You touched me in many ways and I never knew who I would also meet when I would stop in and visit because both you and Chuck had such an array of friends. You made my world a bit easier and fun because of your hospitality and inclusiveness into your world.

Never will forget the day we met in 1992. So here is a spot of tea to you and sharing of some memories. Hugs and kisses. Alice

Well I recently visited Chuck in Fairbanks, popped in for a visit and could feel the presence of Margaret in the house with her sewing handiwork and wee nick nacks.
It was peaceful and I could vision her sewing machine in the living room and her working on her fur and handiwork projects of table clothes and aprons!
Oh forgot the ironing board table too. I am reminded of her with the handiwork I have in my apartment she gave me along the years : a handmade pot holder ,Christmas table runner and a cute ceramic bird.
She made such an impact in my life and I am sure many others as her hospitality was a gift she gave to many and because of her I realize the impact it has had on me and I try to pass it forward.
Miss her! Hugs to Chuck and family

Auntie Margaret was a very special lady and someone who had an impact on my life. I enjoyed the visits when she would come down from Alaska to spend time with her sister Carol and take care of their Mother. She had such a gentle nature and her faith in God truly was a blessing. She shared many stories with us about her various volunteer activities and was always such a pleasure to spend time with. She had a way of making a person feel as though they were the most important to her as we would sit and visit. I have thought of her often over the years. My biggest regret was that I didn't take the time to keep in better in touch. Life seems to happen fast. My condolences to chuck and the family.

It was our pleasure to have the opportunity to get to know both Chuck and Margaret on our visits from Minnesota to Fairbanks to spend time with our children, Russ and Rebekah Vander Lugt. It is a joy to recall how Margaret blessed our children, as well as our grandchildren, with her kindness and her godly character and example. She will always be remembered for her attention to the little details in the lives of others and for her loving notes and cards. Margaret will be greatly missed!
It is often said that words have not been written that can possibly convey the experience of eternity. No eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him.

Chuck & family

So sorry to learn of Margaret's passing. How I treasure those visits to your home and the lunches she made for us. Her stories of nursing in the upper Yukon were gold, every bit as interesting as Chuck's hunting stories! She touched so many lives

Margaret was our PHS nurse and friend during my childhood in Ft. Yukon. My Mom and Dad loved this lovely lady with all their hearts, and looked forward to her visits to our Yukon Lodge. My youngest sister was named for her.

Margaret was very kind to me and I first met her at the first Presbyterian Church while I was visiting Fairbanks in 1992.

She thought I was there to get a bag lunch which was a ministry at the church. With her humble and unassuming ways she showed kindness to me and many others. It was very much appreciated. She was blessed and therefore with what she was blessed with , she blessed others. She always felt grateful to her husband Chuck and because her husband Chuck blessed her, she never forgot to bless others.

What you felt when you sat or visited with Margaret was "presence" I felt that she had the time and attention just for me. This is something missing a lot now a days with our hurried life styles. Her ministry was her home which she took seriously. It was a sanctuary for the lonely to feel "Belonging". That is what I felt.
She cared for her neighbors and prayed for them and showed acts of kindnesses to them in many ways..whether it was the young neighbor children popping in for a visit and a snack or just a friend to chat.
What can I say? I will miss her and can still hear her voice.

Hugs and kisses to Chuck and all family members.

Margaret and Chuck opened their house to me for a few months till I found my own place to live in Fairbanks. Home is where the heart is and Margaret loved to have visitors stop by for tea like me. She always had baked cookies on hand.

It was comforting to know that their house was open to drop in..like family.
Margaret was a devout friend to me and all her friends. she loved to write letters to update me on the activities at 311 Slater Dr.
Margaret had the gift of HOSPITALITY, something that is very powerful gift to those who need a home away from home like me.
Many times I mentioned to Margaret to write about her adventures while working as a pioneer chemo-tuberculosis nurse in Alaska in the 50's. She wanted to keep the anonymity of her clients and therefore was very respectful of them therefore declined.
