Robert Teel Obituary

Robert (Robbie) Kennedy Teel IV was born in Clearwater, Florida, in October 1968. In 1972, his family moved to Fairbanks. Robert was a proud graduate of Lathrop High School's class of 1987.
Anyone who knew Robert knew what an avid sports fan he was, especially of hockey. He loved the Fairbanks Ice Dogs and the UAF Nanooks. Rob had the unique ability to remember sports statistics. You could ask him who played second base in the 1990 World Series, and he would almost immediately tell you the player's name.
Robert was a very special person. To describe him as a fighter is an understatement. While he faced health issues from the time he was born, in 1999, he became the first person to have a bloodless heart transplant at USC in Los Angeles. He was told the average life span of a heart transplant recipient was 10 years, yet he defied the odds and lived for 16 years with that heart. While his transplant served him well, at the same time, the anti-rejection medications necessary to keep alive would eventually take their toll.
2012 would bring Robert's next health challenge, kidney failure. After 42 years in Alaska, in October 2014, Robert and his mother moved back to Florida where he was placed on a kidney transplant list in Gainesville. A few months later, he learned he had kidney cancer. On Feb. 12, 2016, at age 47, Robert lost his courageous fight with cancer.
He will always be remembered for his positive attitude and kindness to everyone.
In addition to Rob's love of sports, he had another, more important aspect of his life. That was his loyalty to his God, Jehovah. No matter what Rob was facing with his health, you could count on him being at his weekly meetings at the Kingdom Hall. He wholeheartedly believed what the Bible teaches regarding the earthly paradise hope that's held out to mankind and it was his goal to be a part of the promise made in Psalm 37:29.
As his days grew short, he drew comfort knowing that while he would fall asleep in death, he had faith in the resurrection promise made at John 11:25, " ... I am the resurrection and the life. The one who exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life."
He was proceeded in death by his father, Robert Teel III. He is survived by his mother, Mary Teel, and sister, Sheila Reynolds, of Gainesville, Florida; brother Paul and wife Samara and nephews and nieces Shane, Rachelle and Rayna Reynolds, and Jonathan and Joshua Teel, all of Fairbanks. He is also survived by his brother from another mother, John Bachner, his loyal friend since kindergarten, and wife Nicole.
A memorial will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses at 1247 Old Steese Highway at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Haven Hospice, 4200 NW 90th, Gainesville, FL 32606.

Wow, I moved away from Fairbanks in 1999 and am just finding out that Paul Teel passed away in 2017 and then I looked up Robert and see that he passed away in 2016. I knew Robert since grade school. His mom and my mom, Janice Farrell (McDonald) were good friends. Its hard to remember because it was many years ago, but I am sure it was his mom's hair salon my mom always took us to to have her do our hair. Robert was very thoughtful and caring. I never heard him say a bad word about anyone. I know that he is happy in Heaven now with his father and brother Paul, and one day we will all be there together with our friends and family, God willing.

I met Robert many years ago working at a local video rental store, Box Office Video. He was always full of information on such a wide variety of topics and I could tell he enjoyed sharing that endless knowledge. He knew I played hockey locally and that was our common ground. For as long as I can recall after that, any time I would run into him, generally on a Friday or Saturday night attending the Ice Dogs or Nanooks, he never forgot to ask about how hockey was going or if I was still actively skating. From there, he would always talk about our brief time working together at Box Office. I genuinely enjoyed those weekly interactions. I hope his family finds solace knowing he was a kind and genuine person in the most sincere form, as I cannot recall a time he didn't greet me with a smile and a friendly handshake. Rest easy.

I'm so sorry to hear about Robert -- I remember him so clearly from long time ago when I was a child and attended the Kingdom Hall - he took such pride in being part of the brothers who served. Whether it was guiding people to their chairs or bring the microphone to them to share a comment. Its a sad day :(

February 23, 2016

So sorry Mary to hear this sad news. Although we haven't seen any of you for years, when speaking of friends and family still in Fairbanks, some how you and Bob always come up. Robbie was just a little guy when we left there and what I remember of him was 99% of the time that kid had a smile on his face. May God Bless you and the family.

Mary,
Sig and I treasure the times we visited with Rob when we would see him on our neighborhood walks. We especially appreciate his visits in our home when he stopped by while out on his walks to update us on his progress after his heart transplant. We missed his visits after he moved to another Fairbanks neighborhood and then to Florida. The pictures of him striding contentedly or in conversation with us will always remain in our memories and hearts. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
