On Sept. 8, 2024, Shaun Moss Denning of Fairbanks, Alaska, finished his race on earth and was called home to our Lord Jesus Christ. After many years of cardiovascular health related issues, Shaun passed away peacefully from heart complications at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska. He was 68 years old.
Shaun is survived by his devoted wife, Susan; his loving children, Patrick Oberg, Shane (Darcy) Denning, Shannon (Victoria) Denning, Steven (Laurelie) Denning and Sarah (Alex) Boudreau; his grandchildren, Makenzie, Keegan, Kiersten, Sienna, Azarah, Zemirah, Elijah, Razielah, Ezekiel, and Zevulun; his brothers, Sun Feather Light Dancer and Paul Denning; his step-brother, David Fleser; and his step-sister, Judith Fleser.
Shaun was born Jan. 25, 1956, in Bellingham, Washington to Clair Moss Denning and Donna Jean Hamlin. Shaun spent his early life in Delta Junction, Alaska, which he always considered his home. He often spoke fondly of the memories from that time in his life. While living in Fairbanks, Shaun married Susan. Shaun adored his wife with all his heart and soul. They raised four children together and were married for 46 years.
Living an exceptional and interesting life, Shaun traveled the world including living in Pakistan and South Korea as well as working in Russia and Afghanistan. He loved the mountains of the Alaska Range and the feeling of peace the snowcapped peaks gave him. Shaun was a man of adventure and action. He treasured the outdoors and was a big game hunter and avid fisherman. He loved being on the water whether in a canoe floating the Chatanika River, boating at Birch Lake, or fishing in the Gulf of Alaska. Shaun was an outstanding athlete and was known for his skill as a skier, having once been in the open circuit trying out for the Olympic qualifying team in giant slalom skiing.
With a strong sense of duty to serve others and a love for his country, Shaun spent his life helping people. He was a volunteer medic at Bassett Army Hospital on Fort Wainwright and a volunteer firefighter. He loved to teach others his love of skiing and was a ski instructor along with his wife Susan at Eielson AFB for many years. Shaun also volunteered his time and services as a medic on call at Birth Lake Recreation Area. Shaun served as a Health and Safety advisor for 25 years on the North Slope for Alyeska Pipeline.
Shaun was a man with an enormous and charitable heart for so many people. He was a father figure to all the people who came into his life. He loved his family fiercely and is fondly remembered as a provider, a protector, and a man who put other's needs before his own. Shaun was a devout Christian who truly believed in God. Shaun was a long-time parish member of Freedom in Christ Church and later North Pole Worship Center. His heart was full of the joy of our Lord, and he did his best to bring forth the kingdom of God. We know he is resting in glory in Heaven as a faithful servant of Christ.
Shaun was a jokester who always had a joke ready and a big hearty laugh that warmed the soul to hear. He will truly be missed but his memory will live on through the countless lives he touched. The world is a lesser place without him but was surely made better by his life. We love you, Shaun and may you rest in peace with our Lord.
