Tilmon Taylor Obituary

Tilmon was one of eight children born and raised in the small town of Rayville, Louisiana. He worked his way through Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After graduating with a degree in special education, his teaching career began in Rayville, Louisiana. During a one-month visit with his aunt and pioneer Jessie Robinson, he fell in love with the state of Alaska. A teaching position was applied for and accepted on the same day in June 1970, and the beginning of his legacy began to blossom.
The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District education career began for Tilmon at Lathrop High School. After four years of teaching at Lathrop, Tilmon was offered a position to develop a work-study program for the district's special needs students. To this day, the program he designed is used throughout the district to assist our students with classroom development and essential life skills. After successful expansion of the work-study program, Tilmon advanced to head coordinator of special education. He oversaw the programs at Lathrop, West Valley, North Pole and Eielson Air Force Base high schools until he retired.
After 29 years as a teacher and administrator, Tilmon continued his public service and involvement in the local community as a full-time volunteer. Activities during and after his teaching career included:
• Assisted in the development of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "Hoops For Scholars" annual basketball tournament in Fairbanks. The purpose was to bring people together of all cultural backgrounds, from many different areas of the country, and provide continuing education scholarships to aspiring youth. More than $56,000 has been awarded to deserving athletic-scholars in Fairbanks to pursue their educational goals.
• Past president of the local NAACP Branch. During his presidency, the unit succeeded in persuading the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District to officially recognize the third Monday in January as a national holiday for all school district employees and students, in the memory of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
• Member of the American Legion Post 57. Recognized as a Civilian Friend of the U.S. Army-Fort Wainwright. Provided support to current and past U.S. Military personnel, The Fairbanks Police Department and their families with various activities.
Tilmon leaves to cherish his memories: A loving and devoted son, Delmone Taylor; two brothers, Cartrell Taylor of Houston, Texas, and Sylvester Taylor of Rayville, Louisiana; four sisters, Caroline Landis and Betty Martin of Monroe, Louisiana, and Louise Taylor and Florida Taylor of Rayville, Louisiana; and a host of nephews, nieces and many loving friends.

Delmone and the Taylor family: I am so sorry to hear about Tilmon. He was such a great mentor teacher to me. I met him back in 1993 when I first flew into Fairbanks from South Dakota. I was hired to teach special education at Hutch and he helped me beyond measure. He made sure my students were able to work in the community under his work study program. He became a very special friend. I always admired him and all of the work he did in the community. Tilmon was a great leader and tirelessly gave of his time for the good of the students! He was absolutely the best! I will love and miss him forever! Soar with the eagles Tilmon. Danna Nickels

Tilmon was a special person that sought to unite and cheer others with a humerous joke or smile. Tilmon loved his classmates and friends by hosting Class of 63 Reunion meetings at his residence. In June 2019 Tilmon held a special reunion including my family & classmates at his home.

I knew Tilmon through his work at the school district. He started and ran for many years a work-study program that helped students find careers, earn needed credits to graduate, and put some money in their pockets. Tilmon worked very hard to connect with employers and then stay connected as his students were placed. He also had an easygoing personality, was fair and got along so well with people in the community and his teacher colleagues. Tilmon really "set the stage" for the current Hutchison High School, because he saw the need to provide students with practical goals that motivated them to finish high school. One of the District's heros who will be missed by many. Doug Crevensten.

The world has lost a wonderful man. Tilmon was a popular teacher and a dedicated leader. His son Delmone was in my 8th grade math class and was following his Father's examples of being a strong man. I imagine you Delmone as a strong man because you showed those traits as an 8th grader. May Tilmon's family and friends find comfort in knowing he will not be forgotten in Alaska. May God give your comfort in your sad time.

Mr. Tilmon Taylor was a wonderful, sweet man. He was my softball coach years and years ago, and I had the pleasure of reconnecting with him a short while back when we were on the same flight out of Fairbanks and sat in the same row. I thought the gentle, soft-spoken Mr. Taylor didn't seem to age. I will remember him as someone who helped those he saw in need--an angel on earth. My heartfelt condolences to his family.
