Vivian Spencer Obituary

Heaven got a lot louder when our mom arrived on the morning of Aug. 4. Vivian Spencer was born in Unionville, Michigan, on July 11, 1929. She would always tell people, "The year of the crash." She ended up in Fairbanks in 1948 due to our father's military service.
Like a lot of Alaskans, then and now, they fell in love with the state and would live here (after the Air Force sent them to Florida for a year) for the rest of their lives. They made lifelong friends during that time. We lived with the Queens on one side and the Kings on the other. Mom always said that we were "The Jokers in the middle." We believe those were some of the happiest times of her life. Later, Jenny King would often visit, and they would reminisce about the old days.
Vivian was a stay-at-home mom until her fifth child, Lindsay, turned 7. Then she went to work at the "old age" of 40. She worked as a letter carrier for 30 years. She loved her job and the people on her routes loved her. We think she was just glad to get out of the house after raising five kids: Rick, Vickie, Roberta, Valerie and Lindsay. She had nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
After retirement she enjoyed it when her sister, Marge, came to visit. They would take off to garage sales. We would roll our eyes at some of the stuff, but mom would say those are my treasures. You can get rid of them when I pass. Now some have become our treasures. They also loved to spend time up the Salcha River or at Harding Lake. They were always giggling like little schoolgirls and up to something.
Once up at the Salcha cabin they decided to make granola bars to lose weight, only to wake up and have had a squirrel eaten them all; laughter ensued, diet was over. They both intended to continue to have fun together but sadly Aunt Marge passed from cancer. Later, her brother, Wally, his wife, Margie, and her sister, Barb, came to visit. They had a wonderful time together. Didn't know "old" people could have so much fun together.
Mom passed away at the age of 95 at 5 a.m. on Aug. 4, 2024. She is reunited with loved ones/friends gone before; her husband, Robert; and her son, Lindsay. May the laughter and fun ensue.

Grandma Lightning was a treasure, indeed! I always enjoyed her stories and company and will always think of her when there is German Potato Salad on the menu. I hope her and Aunt Marge are rocking on some colorful macrame chairs catching up with everyone! My sincere condolences to family and friends.

Vickie and siblings, I remember your family from the Barnettes being our babysitter looong ago and of course, from school. I remember both your parents and your mom as being a forthright, energetic woman! My condolences; both our parents have passed also. It's a lonely feeling to be without them.
Vickie, my fb page is under jsholman, if you feel like reconnecting. In the meantime, all the best and sorry about your mom. I hope all your memories comfort you all. Love, Suzette

One of the first Alaskans I got to know when I stumbled into my future home. She really was a unique individual. We still have some of her "Treasures" in our house and yard. God Bless, Grandma Lightening.

I´m so sorry to hear of Vivian´s passing. Lyle Flowers was my Father and worked for USPS after retiring from the military. I remember him talking about Vivian and what a wonderful person she was. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

For a few years before pursuing a State Trooper career I was a Letter Carrier and worked alongside Vivian. No nonsense lady, beyond efficient, endless energy. Traits hard to come by for a postal carrier facing a day outside at -40 below stuffing mailboxes. I sold her a coffee table for her cabin that was laced and had gut webbing like a wooden snowshoe before I moved to Hawaii a couple years. I hope it's still there. Sweet lady, the USPS was lucky to have found you.

I am so sad to hear of Vivian´s passing. My father, Lyle Flowers, was career military and after retiring he became a letter carrier for a short time before becoming a postal supervisor. My mother Shirley was already a carrier. Dad was born the year of the Big Crash in 1929 and spoke very highly of Vivian and considered her a friend as well as a co-worker. Both my parents are gone and I´m sure they will be right there to greet your Mom as she steps through Heaven´s gates. May your family find peace and comfort during this sad time.
