August 13, 1951 - November 10, 2025
Richard Alan Kane, aged 74, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2025 after a hard fought battle with cancer.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 18, 2025 at 12 noon at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Lidgerwood, ND. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Rick was born in Valley City, ND on August 13, 1951 to Verda Bohnenstingl Kane and Vaughn Kane. The family moved to Mount Shasta, California when Rick was very young, back to Urbana, North Dakota when he was a child, and finally settled in Fargo, where Rick graduated from Fargo North High.
Rick then met his wife, Judi Olson and they planted their roots in Fargo.
Rick enlisted in the Army in 1969 and left for Fort Lewis Washington for basic training, then onto Fort Bragg, North Carolina for AIT. Rick completed jump school, proudly telling stories of his many adventures and countless shenanigans. After active duty, Rick came home to Fargo to serve his country in the 367th Combat Engineers and 5043rd, where he taught combat engineering skills. Rick earned several awards over his impressive 28 year career and retired as an MSGT (E-8) in 1996.
Rick was always a hardworking and dedicated man, He began working as a teen at Bjornson's, and after he came home from active duty in the Army, got a job at the John Deere Implement in Jamestown. He later attended Moorhead Tech to earn his diesel mechanic degree and worked several mechanic jobs until he opened his own shop, RJM, named for his beloved sons. Rick finally retired from Interstate Assemblies and spent the rest of his days playing with his grandchildren and enjoying his hobbies.
By his side through it all was his wife, Judi. The pair met in 1973 when Rick stopped by the Dairy Queen where Judi worked. He always had a fond love for ice cream, and it led to him finding the love of his life. They married on June 23, 1974 and spent the next 51 years making memories, sharing laughs, and engaging in their communities through church, volunteer work, and being good neighbors and friends to all. They welcomed five beautiful children and made their home on the north side of Fargo. In the mid 90's, they purchased a farmstead in Lidgerwood, North Dakota, and have worked tirelessly to make it their own. In his later years, Rick split his time between his beloved farmstead and their condo in West Fargo.
Rick was a man of many hobbies and talents. His greatest joy was his children and grandchildren, and he loved visits from them and their dogs. Rick loved to fish and hunt. He had endless stories to tell about the bucks he got and the fish he caught. He loved to bake, garden, ride his bike, and tinker with engines. He would very proudly tell of the renovations he and Judi were doing at the farm. Until the end, Rick diligently worked on all the projects he longed to complete. One of his greatest talents was his gift for conversation. Rick could talk to anyone about any topic, and often loved to converse over a cup of coffee or a glass of brandy.
