I grew up in Halifax County, where Mildred Stroud Brooks taught me at Weldon Elementary School when I was in 7th grade. Later, when I was a young adult, her influential role in my life continued when her husband left retirement to become interim pastor and eventually pastor of The Good News Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, where I had the joy of being a charter member. In 1994 I moved to Raleigh and maintained my friendship with Mrs. Brooks in Wake Forest and later when she lived in Rutherfordton. I will always remember and cherish my memories of her love of God, family, others, and especially her love for her brother Al. Of course, growing up in the Roanoke Rapids area and then spending close to 15 years of my early career as an educator there, I also knew the respect many in the business, civic, and religious community had for Al. It is my honor to write this note in memory of him and also out of my respect and love for Mildred Stroud Brooks, one of this world's finest teachers and storytellers and one of my career and life mentors. I can only imagine the "cutting up" that she and Al are doing in the reunion they are experiencing now! To the siblings and family members, I offer my loving sympathy in this time of loss.
