Alexander Hale Allen
January 27, 1948 - November 7, 2025
Raleigh, North Carolina - Alexander H. Allen, 77, of Raleigh, NC, died Friday, November 7, 2025, surrounded by loving family at the Hospice Home at Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh. He had been recently diagnosed with cancer, which he faced bravely through his treatment.
Alex was born in Roanoke, Virginia, on January 27, 1948, to Alexander V. Allen and Marian L. Allen. After moving to Raleigh, Alex attended Fred Olds Elementary School and Daniels Junior High before graduating from Broughton High School in 1965. He graduated from NC State University with a Bachelor of Zoology in 1969 and was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.
Alex worked for nearly 3 decades in the brick industry, working with the Borden, Cherokee Sanford, and General Shale companies. While he was committed to his work, his life was defined by the friendships - many of them lifelong - he built along the way. Whether childhood friends and classmates, fraternity brothers, colleagues, or neighbors, Alex made friends and kept them. Known to his buddies as Alex, AA, and a number of nicknames perhaps unsuitable for print, his friendships were punctuated by his sense of humor. In his free time, Alex enjoyed fishing and boating near Holden Beach, the occasional golf outing, and walking along Raleigh's greenways.
Alex was preceded in death by his parents, A.V. and Marian Allen, daughter, Caroline Virginia Allen, and niece, Ashley Elizabeth Duncan.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Betsy Allen; son, Rob Allen (Casey); daughter, Katie Watson (Brennan); and grandchildren Felix and Julia Watson; sister, Judy Allen; brother in law, Bob Rankin; close family friend, Andy Hensley - all of Raleigh - and brother in law, Bill Rankin (Diane); and nephews Joey and Andy Rankin (Ellen), of Atlanta, as well as an extended family of caring in-laws.
In lieu of flowers, Alex would have appreciated donations to Mitchell Mill Animal Hospital Rescue (

Checks may be mailed to the address below, with the intended endowment listed in the memo line: ECU University Advancement, 2200 S. Charles Boulevard, MS 301, Greenville, NC 27858-4353.
Family and Friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at 2 pm to celebrate Alex's life and memory at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, 2209 Fairview Road, Raleigh, NC 27608.
Brown-Wynne, 300 Saint Mary's St., Raleigh is serving the Allen family.
