Arthur Warner Obituary
Arthur Saye Warner
May 7, 1937 - December 24, 2023
Raleigh, North Carolina - Arthur "Art" Saye Warner passed away peacefully in the early morning of December 24th, 2023, in Raleigh. He is survived by his devoted wife, Jacqueline Potter Warner, and his children and their families: Taylor (Solange, Ashley, Coston), Danny (Janette, Jack, Ava, Chloe), and Mary Ann (Lynne), as well as his three sisters, Elizabeth, Debrah and Anne.
Art was born on May 7th, 1937, in Okinawa, Japan, to Rella (Forsee) and Gerald Warner. He received his undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University and MIT, followed by a Master's Degree from Syracuse University and then started his Ph.D. from NC State University. After graduating, Art spent his working years as a software engineer with IBM, first in Poughkeepsie, New York, and then in Raleigh, North Carolina. During his time at IBM, he received numerous patents, including one while working with the team developing the UPC code.
Art was a passionate fan of NC State and the Atlanta Braves. He attended many NCAA Basketball Final Fours, with his friends and family and looked forward to it every year. I am sure he was looking down and cheering loudly for the Wolfpack this past March. His love of golf and all sports has been passed down to his children and grandchildren.
Art was also an active member in many charities including the North Raleigh Optimist Club, the ARC of Wake County, Special Olympics of North Carolina, Frankie Lemmon School, Meals on Wheels and St Mark's Episcopal Church, where he served on its vestry.
More importantly, Art was a kind and devoted father and grandfather who cherished spending time with his family and grandchildren at Emerald Isle beach, playing cards, bowling, putt-putt, and all board games. Bridge and gin rummy were two of his favorite card games and would play anytime someone would ask. The Warner's were also known for long running, gin rummy tournaments during Christmas. Most of the time, mom and dad were the final two playing and it was a toss-up who would win. The competitive Warner spirit lives on in his children and grandchildren.
A memorial service be held on Saturday May 4th at 11am at St Marks Memorial Garden, 1725 N New Hope Rd in Raleigh. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Art's name to any of the charities mentioned above.
