Barrie Bergman Obituary

Barrie Bergman

Santa Barbara

Barrie Bergman, 78, of Santa Barbara, California, formerly of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, departed this world unexpectedly on September 11, 2020, at his home.

During his life, Barrie enjoyed success as a business entrepreneur, author, lecturer and loving husband, father and grandfather.

Barrie was born July 7, 1942, in Durham, North Carolina and was the son of the late Harry and Bertha Bergman, founders of the original Record Bar, a retail record store in Durham. After graduating from Durham High School and attending Duke University, Barrie joined his parents in the record business and married his high school sweetheart, the late Arlene Macklin Bergman. Together, Barrie and Arlene opened and managed Record Bar's second store in Chapel Hill.

Music was always a passion and way of life for Barrie. Through Barrie's charismatic leadership, Record Bar grew to the second largest national chain with over 180 stores in 30 states. In October 1989, the company was sold to a European video distribution company. At age 47, Barrie soon found a new challenge and, together with a business partner, he purchased Bare Escentuals, a bankrupt 4-store cosmetic retail business. Twenty-four stores later and a constant presence on QVC, Bare Escentuals was sold and was Barrie's second successful business venture.

After his business successes, Barrie became a sought-after consultant, adviser and lecturer. He willingly shared his knowledge, experience, insights into human nature and the importance of ethical business behavior. Barrie's principles can be best summarized in the title of his book "Nice Guys Finish First: How to Succeed in Business and Life".

Barrie was nationally recognized for his business talent and principles. Among other awards, he was honored by the United Jewish Association as a recipient of the Human Relations Award. He was also recognized within the music industry as Music Retailer of the Year and Music Personality of the Year by Music Retailer magazine. In 1975 Barrie was named merchant of the year by the National Association of Record Manufacturers and in 1979 was elected as the Association's youngest president. Recently, Barrie served as a trustee of the University of California Santa Barbara Foundation and as a member of the board of directors of the Santa Barbara Bowl, the town's premier music venue.

Following Arlene's death Barrie was fortunate to find love again and married Marjorie Allen Reese. Barrie's life was once again filled with joy as he and Marjorie continued to reside together in Santa Barbara and treasure life with each other, their families, and their many friends.

Barrie was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; two daughters, Janis Bergman Tillman and husband, Jeff, of Chapel Hill, and Kimberly Bergman Kuepferle and husband, Steve, of Hillsborough; two grandchildren, Jacob and Julia Tillman; his sister Lane Bergman Golden of Chapel Hill and nieces Page Coleman and Cameron Golden.

A private family graveside service and burial will be held on Friday in the Durham Hebrew Cemetery, in Durham.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to: Arts & Lectures, University of California Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA 93106, artsandlectures.sa.uscb.edu; or USTA Foundation's College Scholarship Fund for scholarships awarded annually to high school seniors who have excelled academically, demonstrated community service and participated in organized tennis programs, such as National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL). Donations may be sent to: USTA Foundation, 70 West Red Oak Lane, White Plains, NY 10604, or made online through: https://www.ustafoundation.com/barriebergman/.

I think of Barrie and Arlene often and miss them. When I picture them in my minds eyes, they are dancing at their 50th wedding anniversary party looking so beautiful and in love. Since Barrie´s passing, I often tell people who did not know him about one of the kindest and sweetest men I knew and his beautiful lady love who I admired and loved so much. I miss them both shut know they are dancing and smiling and at peace. Much love to his family today and always

Still finding it hard to realize Barrie is no longer with us, one year in. Arlene, Barrie, Kim and Janis will always be close to my heart. We had a number of grand years together, which I continue to cherish. Barrie touched so many people in so many positive ways. So much to say, but words are still difficult for me. Love to all who are hurting, Forest

Really loved playing tennis and talking music with Barrie! I'm just sorry I didn't get to know him sooner. What a remarkable man. He will truly be missed on the Polo Club tennis courts.

Barrie was such a wonderful friend to have. We enjoyed the same things, music, great food, single malt, travel, cars, holidays, repartee, family, parties, and he made certain we got to share all this with him. Although we were from different hemispheres and completely different realms, it didn't make any difference. He brought my sister Alexa and I into the fold and without his warmth of heart and generous, passionate spirit, we wouldn't have all the great memories with him, Arlene, Janis and Kim. I will miss you so much Barrie, America for me will never be the same without you, you were kind of central to all my trips there.. however now I'll be bothering Janis and Kim when I get to visit there again (lol) Love you heaps.. Mel xx

Barrie was inspirational, generous, loving and altogether a fine human being. My sister and I were making our way around the world living on what we could make from our music. Barrie loved our singing and did much to support us, make sure we were able to attend gatherings and included us as family members. He was a beautiful human and I am very happy to have known him. In my more mature years, i try to reciprocate the generousity Barrie showed me by supporting young people who enter my sphere. My memories of Barrie bring me smiles and good feelings. For that alone I thank him. Those memories keep him close no matter which side of the mortal divide we are on.

We are heartbroken to hear this news. We met Barrie after Hurricane Katrina through his wonderful network of music and tennis friends, and were lucky to see him each year during Jazz Fest. Thank you Barrie for being so kind to us and our family (Annie and Guy Smith). Thank you for the many laughs about the music business and politics, all enjoyed over many great bottles of wine. Thank you for calling and checking on our family during the pandemic. We wish our best to the family in this disorienting time and thank you all for sharing Barrie with us. Love, Ham and Teresa Farris

Hello dear Janis and Kim. I met you when I arrived on a musical venture with NZ Melanie Forbes (sister Alexa) in 1994 in your Mum and Dad’s home in the South Carolina. There’s so much to say and so much to thank you all for. I believe your family reconnected with Melanie, her dear identical twin daughters and Alexa just prior to Arlene passing. I was saddened to know of Arlene’s passing.
I am happy Barrie found love again however I write to say how incredibly saddened I am to know of dear Barrie’s passing.
He was more inspired than the word ‘inspiration’ , more dedicated than the word ‘dedication’ , more loyal the word ‘loyalty’ and more honest than the word ‘honesty’ and lastly, completely ‘unforgettable’.
My sadness relates to a feeling of a long time ago of meeting Barrie and family however it relates to knowledge of the beauty of everything that transpired from that time.
For all those that loved Barrie I send my love and respectful thoughts.
Deepest condolences
Nicci (Nichola) Heffernan

Janis, Kim--

I am so sorry.
What a wonderful ride your Dad provided for all of us who knew him, for your Mom especially and your loving family.
This man was one of the most admirable, charismatic and wonderful friends Ive ever known.
I am so grateful to have spent such memorable moments with him, even for such a short time.
Know that your dad left an indelible and irreplaceable mark in all the worlds he touched. Truly a Giant.
I am thinking of you in this terrible time of sorrow.
Please take care.

I was so saddened to hear of Barries passing. Platinum among men, Barrie never ceased to amaze me with his generosity of spirit, his kindness, and his ever lasting love and compassion for all he loved. His family was his world and his legacy will live on in all the hearts and lives he made such a huge impact on. Such a beloved and dear man. I, for one, feel blessed and one of the lucky ones the universe put him in my path. Heartfelt condolences go out to all his family and friends who love this very special man. Your joyful smile and hearty laugh live on and on Barrie. We will miss you terribly but know you are with loved ones. Until we meet again.
