Betty Lou Haithcock Peoples
January 23, 1937 - August 23, 2025
Raleigh, North Carolina - Betty Lou Haithcock Peoples passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at the age of 88. Betty was born on January 23, 1937, in Warrenton, NC. The youngest child of the late Earlie Duval Haithcock and Bessie Hudson Haithcock.
Surviving is her daughter, Beverly McKim; granddaughter, Courtney McKim both of Raleigh, NC.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Earl Delano Haithcock; sister, Barbara Haithcock Dickerson; and husband, Joesph Fenner Peoples, Jr.
After graduating from Louisburg College Betty worked for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham as a purchasing and contracts specialist. Betty was recruited to be a contract specialist for the Environmental Protection Agency when it was established to become a charter member of the Agency.
Betty loved to travel. Betty and her girl pals, Judy, Barbara, and Helen made trips to Cancun, Myrtle Beach, Pigeon Forge, and Williamsburg amongst other sites to shop and enjoy the countryside.
Betty's greatest joys were her granddaughter, Courtney, and her numerous puppies. Betty picked Courtney up from school every day from the time Courtney was in the first grade until she entered high school and could drive. One of Betty's beloved dogs would always be along for the ride home from school when Betty and Courtney would have time to reflect on the day's events.
Betty often recounted her days of playing basketball in high school and she passed her love of sports, particularly basketball, on to Beverly and Courtney. However, Betty's pride in Courtney's golf was unmatched.
Betty instilled her compassion and fierce tenacity in the values her family lives by. But Betty was perplexed how none of her family picked up on her ability to spell any and every word in the dictionary.
The family would like to thank the numerous caregivers who assisted with Ms. Betty's care over the last couple of years.
A service to celebrate Betty's life will be held on Friday, August 29th at 11 a.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary's St., Raleigh, NC. A reception will immediately follow the service at Brown-Wynne with refreshments. A private graveside burial will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, NC.
Flowers are welcome as Betty enjoyed the beauty and fragrance of flowers.
