Bill Shields Obituary

Bill Shields, 83, died October 17, 2006 at Mayview Convalescent Center. Bill was an apprentice sawsmither in Philadelphia, PA when he entered the United States Army Air Corps during WWII. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his service as a ball turret gunner on B24 bomber in campaigns in Italy and France. After discharge from the Air Corps Bill met and married Mary Brady in 1948. He left Philadelphia for North Carolina with his wife and children in 1962 to operate and own Raleigh Saw Company. He ran his successful business until his retirement.
Bill is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Brady Shields; his daughter, Susan Shields; his son, Bill and wife, Joyce Benbow Shields and their children, Chris Shields and Sarah Shields Rogers and her husband, Justin; daughter, Gail Shields Smith and her husband, Van and their children, Brady and Cassidy.
Bill's family would like to express their deep appreciation for the special caregivers at Sunrise of North Hills, Hospice of Wake County, and Mayview.
A Memorial Mass will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at St. Raphael's Catholic Church on Falls of Neuse Road.
The family will receive friends at the church at 10 a.m. prior to the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Alzheimer's Association, 400 Oberlin Rd., Raleigh, NC 27605 or Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605.
