Durham, North Carolina - The world lost a beautiful, bright light on September 8, 2024 when 21 year old Caleb Henshaw was killed in a head on collision by an impaired driver who was driving the wrong way at a high rate of speed on I-40 in Asheville, NC.
Caleb was born in Charleston, SC. He lived in North and South Carolina, spending most of his life in Durham, NC. He spent much of his childhood enjoying the outdoors, exploring the Eno River State Park, hunting, fishing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, skateboarding, playing video games, rock climbing, teaching himself guitar and hanging out with his many friends. He also enjoyed memorable family summer vacations in Arizona, California and on the coasts of North and South Carolina.
After graduating Voyager Academy High School in 2021, he attended Western Carolina University and became a licensed EMT-1. Rock climbing was always his true passion, and he decided to focus full time on sharing climbing with others both recreationally and as a coach. At the time of his death, he was working at the Riveter Climbing Gym in Asheville, NC, where he was a beloved coach and route-setter.
Caleb's loss is felt heavily by his family and friends, both lifelong and new. His sense of humor, goofiness, effortless charm, passion for the outdoors and fitness, unique style and both inner and outer strength will be missed by everyone who was lucky enough to know him.
Caleb is survived by his father, Anthony Godeaux Henshaw Jr, brother, Gage Godeaux Henshaw (7); his mother, Lori Hudson McFarlane, stepfather, Kieran McFarlane and sister, Madeleine McFarlane (4); his maternal and paternal grandparents, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Celebration of Life in Caleb's honor will be held at 2 p.m. on October 12, 2024, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 600 Walnut St, Cary, NC 27511.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made at https://www.gofundme.com/f/caleb-henshaw-memorial-fund in order to help others find and pursue their passions, regardless of circumstance.

Caleb, I had the pleasure of meeting you thru my son Parker MacDowell. I was very impressed with your positive outlook on life and your passions. I remember the day I visited you and Parker, at the house as you guys were roommates, and you both built that awesome indoor climbing gym. Although we only interacted briefly, I always recall you had a smile on your face, and had a positive outlook on life. You will be missed, you touched so many lives in a positive manner. Rest in peace Caleb, and get out there and do some real rock climbing in the kingdom above :) Fred MacDowell

While I wasn´t lucky enough to ever meet this remarkable young man face to face, his beloved little sister Madeleine spoke of him often enough to make me feel like I´m still one of the lucky ones who got to bask in the beautiful light he brought to the world. Though his life was short, his legacy will live forever.

Lori.. my heart breaks for you!! Such a tragedy!! I remember him well at our house and at the wedding. He was such a sweetie and loved asking questions!! Sending hugs and prayers !!
