Salisbury

Carolyn Ann Murray, age 77, a resident of Salisbury, NC, passed away January 12, 2017, after a battle with cancer.

Daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Louis J. Murray, Sr., Carolyn was born in Augusta, Georgia on April 12, 1939, and graduated from Mount Saint Joseph Academy with honors, where she was an outstanding athlete and basketball player.

Carolyn graduated from Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC, with a BS Degree in Education. While there, she introduced her brother, Lou, to a fellow student and his future wife, Peggy Burgin.

She was honored as one of Salisbury's most successful coaches, and the only woman to receive Hall of Fame recognition as a Legendary Coach. She gave all of the credit to her players for their success.

Carolyn was predeceased by her grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Lemuel F. Ghann, who played a very significant role in her life. She is survived by her brother, Louis J. Murray, Jr. and wife, Peggy; two nieces, Susan King and family, Jennifer McPherson and family, and one nephew, Luke Murray and family all of Raleigh, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carolyn Ann Murray Tennis Endowment at Salisbury High School, 500 Lincolnton Road, Salisbury, NC 28144. Or to Hospice.

Hearing about your loss has deeply sadden me. Although no words can take the pain away, I hope the words recorded at Jeremiah 29:1,12 brings comforts your heart.

I am so sorry to learn of Coach Murray's passing. Though I didn't play on the tennis team, she was very encouraging and supportive of my career in track and field. She radiated genuine warmth and kindness; I know she'll be sorely missed by her family, friends and loved ones, to whom I extend my deepest condolences. May she rest in peace.

My sympathy goes out to the family during your time of grief. A life well lived, which Carolyn surely had, will be missed by many. As the day and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends and know that God is near when our hearts are broken.

Ms. Murray was an amazing coach and mentor for me when I was a student and tennis player at Salisbury High School. She got the best from us as both athletes and as individuals. I was so sad to learn about her death and will miss her always.

I was so sad to hear of Ms. Murray's passing. She had a great impact on my life during the good ol' Salisbury High tennis team days. I will always remember her out there on the tennis court and on the sidelines keeping us "fired up"! She led us to winning the Western State title. What fun memories. She will forever be in my heart. Love, Allison (Brooks) Navarro
