Cecilia Cohoon Obituary

Cecilia Woods Cohoon
September 17, 1918 - July 11, 2011
Birmingham, AL
Cecilia Woods Cohoon lived with exuberance and spirit. She was born on Sept 17, 1918 in Richmond, VA to Inez Walker Woods and John Henry Woods--the only girl for 50 years on the Woods side. "Celie" grew up with 5 brothers and graduated from Cathedral High School. She was invited to tour with a group of women playing basketball but decided to attend college. She worked in accounting for British American Tobacco until she met "Bill", William Charles Cohoon and they were married in Sept. 1940.
Celie & Bill lived in Akron, OH while Bill was training with Firestone. The couple moved to Columbia, NC where Bill ran his family's oil distributorship. Here they raised 3 children before moving to Raleigh in 1960. Her loving survivors are: Patricia C Clark (Pat) and husband Denny and Suzanne, Julie, Caroline and Chuck; William Charles Cohoon, Jr. (Bud) and wife Jan; Andrea Wood and husband Drew and Samantha, Kyle, Alec, Charlie and Sean; 7 great grandchildren; a brother Patrick Woods and wife Ginny and many loving nieces and nephews.
Celie was active at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Raleigh for 46 years and enjoyed coordinating weddings and other activities. She was a long-standing member of the Sir Walter Cabinet and the Raleigh Women's Club for 46 years and made many friends while she served in numerous capacities. Celie worked as an accountant in CP & L for several years. She loved her mall walking buddies and swimming at the Rex Wellness Center. She had been in declining health after suffering 2 strokes in 2007 and she passed away July 11, 2011.
Family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6-8 PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home – St. Mary's Street. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at 11 AM at Sacred Heart Cathedral, with interment to follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.

Hello Pat and family, Just received a message from Sue W. regarding your Mom's passing. We were certainly fortunate having wonderful loving mothers throughout our formulative years. I'm sure your mother felt she was fortunate having you as she became older and needed you there for her. Wishing you strength during the next few days and in the days to come. Please come see me when you come to Columbia. Love, Faye D.
