Charles Millwee Beall, died Sunday, January 1, 2012, at MedWest-Haywood after a period of declining health.
He was born on October 24, 1920, in Asheville, NC to the late Charles M. Beall and Nina Morgan Beall. He was also predeceased by his only brother, Robert Morgan Beall.
Charles was a retired Senior Accountant and Comptroller with Champion International Corporation. He also served twenty proud years as a member of the North Carolina State House of Representatives along with service on numerous boards and commissions during his lifetime.
Charles spent his childhood in Wilmington, NC and Richmond, Virginia. He always fondly remembered riding the old trolley to Station One in Wrightsville Beach and to downtown Wilmington to see movies. As a young man, he moved with his parents back to Western North Carolina where he would reside for the remainder of his life. He graduated in 1936 from the old Bethel High School. He attended Brevard College and went on to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the Air Transport Command where he received the Good Conduct Medal and the American Theater Operations Medal.
Charles held various offices and was involved in numerous political offices and ventures. Among them was serving in the State House of Representative from 1979-1998; Chairman of the Haywood County Democratic Party for six years; Delegate to the National Democratic Convention in 1980 and two terms on the Board of Alderman for the Town of Canton. He also served as Elections Board Chair for Haywood County for a number of years. Charles served for many years on the Board of Champion Credit Union and the Cherokee Historical Society. He was proud of being awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the State's highest civilian honor, in 1998 by former Governor James B. Hunt, Jr.
He was Past Master of the Pigeon River Masonic Lodge, a 32nd Degree member of the Asheville Consistory Scottish Rite and York Rite Masons. He was an active member for many years in St. Andrews Episcopal Church where he served as lay leader. He later joined the United Methodist Church where he remained a devoted an active member of Clyde Central United Methodist Church serving as Sunday School teacher, Finance chair, and Chair of the Administrative Board.
He was a good and decent gentleman always and loved his family and especially the people of the mountains. He was proud of his home State and did his best always to serve its citizens with honor. He enjoyed golfing in his younger days, travel, photography, fishing, telling jokes, and working his daily crossword puzzle.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Margaret Jewell Rhinehart Beall; three daughters, Anna Katharine Beall of Clyde, Cynthia Holland Beall Hyatt of Greenville, SC, and Margaret (Maggie) Beall Pollock and husband, Bill, of Raleigh, NC. Also he is survived by his two grandchildren, Alexander Charles Pollock and Anne McGregor Pollock also of Raleigh. He was the proudest grandfather you might imagine. He is also survived by four nephews and one niece.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2012, at Clyde Central United Methodist Church with the Reverend Daniel W. Gaddy and Reverend James Hart officiating. The family will receive guests following the service in the church fellowship hall. A private family burial will be held prior to the service at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery with Father Tim McRee officiating.
