Dr. Charles Otis Boyette, age 81, a resident of Belhaven, NC, died Sunday, March 13, 2016, at his home.

A celebration of his life will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2016, at the Wilkinson Center, 144 West Main Street, Belhaven, NC, officiated by Rev. Cris Noble and Rev. Craig Hagen. Burial will follow in Belhaven Community Cemetery. George Boyette III, Ed Boyette, Nicholas Cristiano, Ryan Boyette, Alan Batchler, Tim Johnson, Rod Lancaster and Russ Lancaster will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, March 18, 2016, at the Wilkinson Center.

Dr. Boyette was born in Chadbourn, Columbus County, NC, on March 6, 1935, son of the late George Otis Boyette, Sr. and the late Kiva Brown Boyette. He was a 1953 graduate of Chadbourn High School where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. Following high school, he was awarded a scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he majored in history and pre-med. In college he was captain of the wrestling team and also participated in football and track. After graduation in 1957, he attended the UNC School of Medicine, receiving his doctorate in 1961. He next served his country as a U.S. Navy Flight Surgeon until 1964. Dr. Boyette then relocated to Belhaven and established the C.O. Boyette Medical Clinic where he served the area until his death. He recently celebrated his 51st anniversary of practicing medicine in Belhaven.

Dr. Boyette had many professional and medical affiliations which included President of North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians; President of Beaufort County Community College Foundation (since 1985); Member of North Carolina Medical Society; Member of North Carolina Institute of Medicine; Member of Governor's Commission on Infant Mortality; Member of North Carolina Medical Directors Association; Medical Director of: Hyde County Health Care Units, Hyde County Health Department, Hydeland Home Health, Hydeland Hospice, Hyde County EMS, and Cross Creek Healthcare Facility. He was Chief of Staff at Pungo District Hospital for 19 years and active medical staff for 48 years.

On a political level, he served as Chairman of the Belhaven Democratic Precinct, Council Member of the Town of Belhaven and member of Beaufort County Democratic Executive Committee. He was Mayor of the Town of Belhaven for 30 years and former Chairman of the Beaufort County Mayor's Association.

His awards include Belhaven Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year, North Carolina Family Physician of the Year, Governor of North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine, National Family Physician of the Year-Runner-up, and Honorary Fireman of Belhaven. The award he was most proud of was the United States Country Doctor of the Year, as his patients meant as much to him as he did to them.

Dr. Boyette was a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Belhaven. He was also an Honorary Member of the Belhaven Fire and Rescue Department. His hobbies included gardening, swimming, boating, water-skiing, wildlife conservation and improving the Belhaven community and area.

Survivors include a son: Charles O. "Chuck" Boyette, Jr. and wife Melissa of Wilmington; three daughters: Marie B. Cristiano of Greenville, Cherryl B. Sullivan and husband Troy of Alexandria, VA and Carla Boyette of Charleston, SC; a brother, James O. Boyette of Bigfork, MT, and seven grandchildren: Nicholas Cristiano, Ryan Boyette, Alissa Boyette, Bryson Boyette, Colin Sullivan, Evan Sullivan and Nathan Boyette. Dr. Boyette was predeceased by three brothers: George O. Boyette, Jr., William O. Boyette and Robert O. Boyette.

In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests donations be made in support of the efforts to re-open the hospital in Belhaven, a cause Dr. Boyette was very passionate about. Checks can be sent to Pungo Medical Center (PMC), P.O. Box 220, Belhaven, NC 27810, or to the charity of one's choice in his memory.

I was a teammate of Charlie's on the University of North Carolina wrestling team. Charlie was the captain of the team my freshman year. What a fine teammate and fine person, a model as an athlete, intellectually, and as a human being. The most down to earth solid person you'd ever want to meet.

My prayers are with the entire Boyette family at this difficult time. I first met Dr Boyette in the late 70's as a brand new Glaxo Pharma drug rep. Dr Boyette treated me with such kindness and great respect. We continued our friendship for many decades thru NC Acd of FP and other organizations. I last saw him in Chapel Hill at the UNC-Duke football game this fall with most of his family with him. I will always remember him as a vigorous advocate for Belhaven in general and a friend of all who value "small town values."

Our deepest Sympathy for the loss of Dr. Boyette. He was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed. I would see him at Cee Bee's marina and yes, he was so passionate about saving the hospital in Belhaven. We spoke about this often. May you find some peace knowing he was loved by many.

My condolences to the entire Boyette family. Your father was our family doctor for as long as I can remember. He cared for my parents, we three kids, and even my own children when they had accidents, or the occasional case of pink eye while visiting their grand parents. My mother, Carolyn, enjoyed every minute that she worked along side Dr. Boyette. He was one of those people that you thought would live forever! My prayer is for you to be comforted during your grieving.

My prayers for Dr. Boyette and his family, friends and coworkers. We will all remember him in our special ways. He has done so much to and for all that concerend him. I thank Dr, Boyette for all the medical help he has given to my husband during his elderly years. I've known him for a very short time, but for others it has been many years. My sincere condolences to his family, during this time of greiving. Remeber the good years and the ones you will behold in the future. Dr. Boyette will have a special place in all the hearts that he has touched over the many years of his servive. From what I understand he truly was a trooper all the way around. He will be missed and has been touched by many. He may have passed in body but his memories will live on for the future to behold. Bless the footprints of his life and legacy. Peace be with the family.

In 1973 I was involved in a terrible car accident along with my four children. We all suffered serious unjuries. Dr Boyette was there for us and saw that our injuries were healed. In 1975 I aquired bladder cancer and again he was there. I have very high blood pressure that he had been treating since 1975. I was born in 1934, Nov.,25, 1934. I am four months older than he. My heart is so sad that I can't do the same for him. He has my prayers and I don't know what I'll do without him. He was a wonderful doctor, a big credit to the medical field.

A man with many titles, but one spirit. "Doc" will be missed by all whom knew him personally or professionally. His works will remain a part of Belhaven for as long as life remains and the history of the Town's most honored and highly regarded and prominent citizens is passed on from generation to generation. My prayers and thoughts are with his children and their beautiful mother at this time. The bike has been parked and the stethoscope has been permanently retired and it is time for you to rest eternally in peace with God. Thank you for so many jobs well done, "Doc".

Dr. Boyette has been my doctor since I was 18 an I am now 71. He was always good to me and I loved him also. Dr. B, as I called him, was the greatest physician I could ever know and I don't know what I will do now. My prayers go to all his family and I am so sorry I couldn't make it to the funeral, but I really wanted to go.

Of course my condolences go out to Dr. Boyette's family, friends and colleagues; but also my thoughts are with the townspeople of Belhaven. The loss of Dr. Boyette is a also huge loss to the community where he fought so hard to improve not only the health of the citizens, but also the economics, among other needs. He will be sorely missed.

March 18, 2016

Dr. Boyette was a client and a friend for over 20 years. He was an inspiration to me and my family on what a physician could and should be. He was tough as nails and yet as compassionate a person who ever lived. I have never known a finer gentleman and community champion. We have all lost a treasure and Belhaven has lost its favorite son. Condolences to all who knew and loved this fine man.

March 18, 2016

Many doctors have saved many a life but " Doc saved mine". Is a simple "Thank You" sufficient, probably not, but that was all Doc expected. He had the gift of making one feel like they were his only patient when you were in his presence. Thank you Doc for my college entrance physical in 1965 and for taking care of me all these years. Maybe now you can rest in peace knowing you did all you could for your patients, your community, your state, and your country.

March 18, 2016

Finding the proper words to express our grief in the death of Dr. B is one of the harder things I have done. He was our doctor and friend for 45 years. He found Jimmy's cancer in 1983 and he kept us going, even when we were in the road.
Our prayers and thoughts are with Marie, Chuck, Cheryl and Carla and with his staff. Wanda, Sharron, Lisa and Hook are also in our prayers as they were his staff and friends for years.
Belhaven has lost a fighter and friend. His patients have lost their Dr. B. Educators have lost a great friend as he loved his teachers and appreciated all they have done to help children.
Rest In Peace, Dr. B.

I pray because I KNOW GOD is in control, I cry because my heart is breaking! I have had the honor and privilege to work with Dr. Boyette as his scribe for the past 16 months. He has taught me more than I could even begin to describe. He loved his patients and did every thing he could to make them better. He was their friend, psychiatrist, podiatrist, oncologist, neurologist, urologist, nephrologist.....and the list goes on! If he couldn't fix it, he would send them to a specialist. He could talk to everyone in such a way to make them feel special. He was my friend and I loved him dearly. I feel lost.....I'm not sure what God has planned for me, but I don't think there will EVER be another doctor like him! I pray that God will be with his family (in which he bragged on all the time). He was very proud of them (especially those grandkids)! I also pray for the ones he was very close to (his co-workers, friends and patients)! May God give all of us peace and comfort at this very difficult time!! We love you Dr. B!!!

My condolences to the entire family of the loss of a great man. Dr. Boyette was a great doctor, humanitarian, and did public service for the greater needs of the community. I worked along side him at PDH for a few years but he was my familys personal physician for many years. My mom worked for him and my dad was a great supporter of Dr. B. In turn, Dr. B. was a great support of my dad and our family. He encouraged me to go to Repiratory school in Durham and now ive been a Duke for 20 years. I wouldn't have done that without Dr. Boyettes influence. I honor you sir with your service to our country, your commitment to your patients and you community based efforts. There is not many people like you. May God bless you and now you earned your reward and may you rest in peace.

To one of the finest physicians and men a young physician could ever encounter! Dr. Boyette was a mentor, role model, colleague and friend to me during the 7 years I worked in the Pungo District Hospital as a younger physician from 1993-2000. I still have the "key to the city" he gave me hanging in my office. This key still brings me many fond memories of working in Belhaven and with Dr Boyette and his patients.... Ralph J DeFriece M.D.

I could never thank him enough for his dedication to his profession, Pungo District Hospital, and to the people and town of Belhaven.
