Charles Dubose Obituary

Charles Holden "Jack" DuBose, A larger than life character and a transformative figure in the economic development of Southeastern NC died Sunday January 10, 2010. According to his son, Charles H. DuBose, Jr. he died peacefully at Sampson Regional Medical Center, he was 92.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday morning at Elizabeth Sumner Memorial Cemetery at the George Hi Plantation with Rev. Mary Ogus officiating.
The first child of Elizabeth Sumner and Clifton Dudley DuBose. “Jack” was born June 22, 1917 at home in Roseboro. A showman and an idea man he had the instincts of P.T. Barnum and the infectious wit of Mark Twain. A bit of a fabulist his special talents thrived on audience reaction and he never failed to deliver a good story or a glib retort.
With a high school education and a wartime stint in the Merchant Marines he returned home to Sampson County. A fledgling entrepreneur ready to make his mark, his most successful effort was DuBose Steel, a company he started in the 1960’s; currently owned and operated by his son, Charles Jr. as DuBose Strapping.
No doubt his proudest legacy is where he called “Heaven”, the George Hi Plantation, a hunting preserve where he carved out of hundreds of wooded acres and where he lived simply with his beloved menagerie, rode his horses and hunted with his dogs. Above all this was a man whose faults add to rather than subtract from the sum of his natural achievements.
“Earth receives this honored guest.”
(W.H. Auden’s Eulogy for William Butler Yeats)
Jack is predeceased by his wife, Natalie Hudson and his two brothers, Cornelius and Donald.
He is survived by his sister, Constance Jones from Akron, OH; four children, Beverly from Lynchburg, VA, Charles, Jr. from Clinton, Deborah from Columbia, SC and Leslie from Clayton, NC; five grandchildren, Alex, Bill, Natalie, Eric and Holden; five great-grandchildren, Cannon, William, Elle, Hudson and Jack.
The family received friends Monday night at the George Hi Plantation Lodge at 3192 Ebenezer Forest Road, Garland, NC from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, Clinton, NC, 110 West Main St. Clinton, NC 28328.

I assume Frodie and Alabama met Jack and is showing him around. Jack already has some great ideas on how to improve the place and to franchise.
The stories will go on, not just through the night but well into the future. I feel fortunate to have heard and laughed at most of them, as salty as they are.
I'll miss my good friend Jack DuBose. Bill Bennett, Wilmington, N.C.

Roseboro will not be the same without Jack and his dog. He was so much a part of this community for many years. We will especially miss his conversations on main street and his love for George Hi.

Jack was a legend in North Carolina business. He loved his hometown of Roseboro and always had a new angle on how things could or should be done. We will miss his salty attitude and generous hospitality.
